I recently dined at Côte in Blackheath with my parents, who were visiting from abroad and excited to try breakfast at a new spot. Unfortunately, our experience was a significant letdown.
From the start, the service was lacking. We were met with no warm welcome or smiles, making us feel more like an inconvenience than valued guests.
The food was the real disappointment. My poached eggs were overcooked—more like hard-boiled—and the beans were rock-hard. Despite my family’s tendency to avoid confrontation, I felt compelled to raise at least my issues with our waiter, not menation my Mom's awful Eggs Royale, and my Dad's and brother's french breakfast with the same issues. The manager kindly offered to replace my meal, but it took 15 minutes for my new plate to arrive, during which my family finished their breakfasts, leaving me to rush mine.
Sadly, the replacement was just as bad. The beans were identical to the first serving but in a smaller portion, and the rest of the meal included undercooked bacon, an average sausage, tasteless potatoes, and ice-cold toast. When the manager checked back, I expressed my dissatisfaction, and he offered to halve the bill. However, after stepping away for a phone call, I learned that no discount was applied, and we ended up paying around £80 for three unsatisfactory french breakfasts, a luewarm and tasteless Eggs Royale and and an okay Cassoulet.
Overall, our visit to Côte was marked by poor service and subpar food. I don't plan to return anytime soon and hope this review serves as helpful...
Read moreOne of the worst dining experiences I have had in a long time. Me and my sister have a weekly brunch date and decided Cote was today's since it had such good reviews, Sadly, wrong!!!! First of all it took over 30 minutes to get coffee, 2 cafetieres one that came without milk so we waited for the milk to arrive. Secondly we ordered eggs benedict each and French toast to share, the French toast was ok but nothing special and we expected special and the eggs benedict was a nightmare so it arrives we both cut into our poached eggs expecting our yolk to run into hollandaise but nope, both eggs on both benedict were rock hard and hollandaise was stone cold not room temp as expected 😠 so we sent it back and got 2 more benedict mine the eggs were now perfect but my sisters were hard again at this point we can't be bothered to send back for a second time so we just eat. Very disappointing food we won't go again, not to mention that during the service whilst our waitress was lovely and gave us a goodwill discount off our bill as she agreed our food was not greatbut there were 2 other members of staff a young guy and girl who just kept hanging around on the stairs next to our table and touching each other, really inappropriate!!! Everywhere the young guy waiter went the girl waitress followed even cleaning a 2 person table together not necessary and it was really uncomfortable. Back to The Ivy next time, dined there last week and it was amazing and...
Read moreI popped by Côte Blackheath for lunch under a table for 1 as I was in-between appointments. Perhaps it was the way that I was dressed (casual) or the way that I looked (definitely not British or white, I'm Chinese), I felt that I was undermined for not being part of the demographic.
My female server was slightly snooty with my lunch choice; I ordered the Breton stew (basically a bouillabaisse) and wanted to add in creamed spinach as a side (okay, may not be the best combination, but I don't think I should be judged for what I craved). Rather than giving a better recommendation to go with the stew, the server asked me as if I didn't know what creamed spinach or the fish stew was in a tone of voice that felt slightly patronising. Her reason being that a tomato stew doesn't mix well with creamed spinach and will do something funny to your tummy (akin to this if I recall). Anyway, I ended not ordering what I wanted, lest I get judged by the staff even more.
Perhaps my appearance didn't fit in with the crowd (mostly middle-class white British people there). But this doesn't mean that I should be perceived less simply because of my food choice or identity. Also, do not judge by appearances because I probably know more about French cuisine even though I'm Asian.
The Breton Fish Stew was well-seasoned, light and brothy. Although I would've preferred if they used fresh shrimp instead of the IQF shrimp (you could tell...
