I used to come here a lot, then had a bad experience followed by 3 more bad experiences and instead of leaving a review I wanted to contact the owner/manager but wasn’t given any contact details.
The main problem with this place is how rigid they are with the menu, until it comes to taking items off then it’s fine. I despise avocado with all my heart, however at bean and hop they belief seems to be that if you don’t eat meat avocado it is! I used to order the vegetarian breakfast quesadilla and pancakes (no arguments with the pancakes) and when I ordered I kindly asked for the avocado to be removed and replaced with mushroom (a much cheaper ingredient at cost than avo) which was fine. Then all of a sudden I got told that they can’t do this even if I offered to pay extra, usually after a waitress had taken the order and come back to the table looking shaken up as a result of facing the ‘chef’. Apparently it’s super complicated to remove avocado for them, I’ve been given various excuses by the waiting staff, the best being when I was told it couldn’t be done because it was so busy with only 6 covers in the building. It’s not very organised and the staff are pleasant but very relaxed and tend to miss several steps of service usually resulting in having to get up to ask for cutlery or water. I was also sat once at 14:50, given menus, then a waiter came over to take my order and when I ordered food was told the kitchen had closed (?) It’s sad, can go to almost any other brunch spot in the earlsfield area, namely Eclectic Collection or Lupo Bros and it is a completely different story. The chef seems to be the one dictating most of this, a strange...
Read moreI'm only really putting 2 stars because the food is decent but the service is absolutely appalling.
We had ordered food and drinks and had been waiting for 30 minutes without even the hot drinks being served when we called the rude waitress (short hair) who said "oh yeah I lost your order - what it is you ordered again?". Shocked at both the attitude and lack of apology, we nonetheless politely repeated the order yet were still served no hot drinks nearly 10 minutes later. When we finally complained to the manager about the fact we'd been waiting for nearly 40 minutes without being served, he, also with an attitude, said "well we're one barista short today so there's only so much we can do" in a defensive tone. Very bizarre customer service and no wonder the staff have attitude when this comes from above!
To add insult to injury, upon receiving the bill and paying, the waitress added the discretionary service charge to the card reader. I asked her to remove it as there was no chance I would have left a penny, to which she snatched the reader away and said "well I'm sorry I can't do that - I need to ask my manager", who of course confirmed it was discretionary... Baffling! I did previously like the food and atmosphere but will...
Read moreWe visited Bean and Hop on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and despite it being very busy, we only had to wait 10 minutes for a table for two. The whole experience was swift - we were seated, served drinks and food quickly, and paid the bill within the hour.
Coffee: The double espresso was fantastic! (5/5) A strong, dark roast with a perfect crema, smooth and delicious. Especially for £2.50, it's a steal! Service: The staff were incredibly friendly and efficient, even on a busy day. We were seated quickly, drinks arrived promptly, and the food followed suit. Food: We tried the breakfast of champignons and the avocado eggs and chorizo. Both were delicious! The mushrooms were buttery and garlicky, and the sourdough was perfectly toasted. The avocado eggs had a generous portion of smashed avocado and the chorizo was perfectly spiced.
Price: The Buck's Fizz was a bit pricey at £8.50, but it did have a good amount of pulp. Atmosphere: It can get quite loud and crowded, especially on sunny days. Overall, Bean and Hop is a great spot for a quick and delicious brunch or coffee. The service is top-notch, the coffee is fantastic, and the food is tasty. Just be prepared for a bit of a wait and a lively atmosphere,...
