Chequers Tavern — Restaurant in London

A nice little pub in the heart of St James. Been here a couple of times and always been fine. Went on Tuesday night with couple of clients - 6 of us. Having a few beers and my colleague moved the menu 'easel' off the small shelf where we had our dinks to a table. This obviously upset the 'manageress' to a great extent. She immediately moved the menu (nothing special) back to its rightful place, shifting our drinks. "you can't be moving the furniture around" she cried. Cripes - Imagine the chaos if we had, heaven forfend, moved a stool. I tried to ask the other bar staff if the lady in question was really the manager, but they looked a bit scared to be honest. Obvioulsy the great furniture shift incident of last year was still too raw.

One other complaint - the bannister going down to the loos is a bit tight to the wall in the middle - always catch my hand in it.

Stay away.

Called for a birthday reservation this Friday and was replied with “we don’t do anything for birthday” “it’s first come first served” in a really aggressive odd tone.

Which is…acceptable but not an issue.

Then I asked if they could just put a drinks stand outside so we can stand drinks on etc as I was going to bring 25/30 people to their establishment.

I was then met with a have you ever been to a pub before? And a genuine rude guy and made a few more comments I won’t repeat.

Not sure where this attitude of superiority has come from, from a guy working in a pub but really not good.

Will be going elsewhere.

Lovely, very small city pub that properly represents what is best about the English Pub - (i) you are allowed, even encouraged to sit at the bar (ii) the layout means it is very easy to have conversations with anyone and be made feel very welcome, (iii) they have a working rope-drive dumb-waiter (Butler Lift) for food delivery, (iv) they have some interesting cask ales - only three pumps BUT at least not the same offerings that are found in nearly 80% of the competition. The decor is old fashioned in a good way, not a fruit machine in site. Thoroughly recommended! But obviously can fill up...
