We paid £56 which was the full amount in advance and went there only to find out that the menu was vegan. If needed anything out of the vegan menu i had to to pay. And we did that and ordered anyway because we didn’t have any other option. And then then we ordered some drinks and they were far too overpriced and didn’t look appealing. And the quantity was less than half a pint. We were waiting on a corner for about 20 minutes until a waitress brought us the banana leaf. And then had to wait another 5 minutes or so for another waiter to come and serve us the food. It said buffet but clearly it wasn’t a buffet. It was a beggar’s meal. We were literally waiting to be served starving. And then multiple waitresses and waiters served us curries one by one which took a long time. and then when all the curries were served on to our banana leaf we were again waiting for someone to serve us rice! which never happened!! and then my wife had to get up and waive at a waiter to ask for rice. Finally it was 25 minutes after when we got the full menu served. Everything was going on the road side and then the big surprise came at the end. We asked for the bill for the extras we had. A drink and a Chicken dish.(had to buy something non-veg as i’m not a vegan but they only had fish and chicken) When the bill came they have added 12.5% taxes to the bill and in the bill THE £56 I PAID SEVERAL DAYS AGO WAS INCLUDED.!!! I don’t understand how you do such things as a reputable restaurant in central london. It was paid days ago and i even received an invoice for that through email. And then i’m being charged when i went there thinking that i’ve paid in full. Not thinking actually as i’ve received an invoice.
This is a total rip off!!! Srilankan, Indian cuisine restaurants never do such cheap things. This is the first time i’ve ever experienced this. And to be honest it’s a scam in my point of view as you’re being overcharged and then you get cheap service and a bad experience. These kind of places should be reported!
Ashamed to say i’m a srilankan to a person who has been to this restaurant. Shame on you for...
Read moreWe were prowling the streets of Soho, on a hunt for fresh new flavours. An afternoon of research can be tough on the feet and bellies alike. Soon enough, the lure of lunchtime became overwhelming and we could walk no further without a tasty nibble. Fortunately for us, we’d stumbled upon Hoppers, one of the JKS Restaurants, the Sri Lankan sister to our much loved Gymkhana. Sold!
Clearly a local favourite, Hoppers had hungry guests queuing out the door for a table. We were seated at the bar counter, a squeeze for tall people but worth it for the tantalising aromas alone. Menus were delivered and the unfamiliar dishes confused us at first. As luck would have it, they’d included a handy glossary to help decipher their offerings. Flavour is the only language we speak (plus English, obviously) but before long we were slinging Sambols and dropping Dosas like Sri Lankan Slim Shady. These dishes were fire, yo!
Do Tamarind and Ginger Chicken wings excite you? How about Devilled Shrimp? We’ve tasted them and can’t stop raving about their awesomeness. The wings were selected from the finest fowl, with muscle tone to rival Chris Hensworth (sorry). They were huge, succulent and satisfying. As for those Shrimp, the Devil himself must’ve devilled them and they danced diabolically around our taste buds, bathing our senses in a luscious capsaicin inferno. Fiendishly good.
The mains came with an egg Hopper, a paper thin, bowl shaped pancake with an egg at its core. We opted to enjoy this new experience with some delicious Karis (Sri Lankan for incredibly good Curry). The Black Pork Kari bathed meaty morsels in a rich and fiery sauce which soaked beautifully into the Hopper. The heavenly quality of the Chicken Kari inspired an out of body experience, forcing our souls to transcend their Earthly bodies and soar to Nirvana on a cloud pure spicy satisfaction, until the bill arrived. We can’t wait to get ourselves back to Hoppers for another taste of Sri Lankan culinary excellence. In fact, better stop writing this and start queuing to get...
Read moreIf I could give this place zero I would. I booked for my (Sri Lankan) family from Australia, which they asked to hold my credit card against the booking - no issue.
When we arrived with my 6’5 sons and nephew, the female manager indicated to a larger table where patrons were finishing up their food and she asked us to wait. She then proceeded to clean down the smallest booth for the four of us. I said that this was far too small and could we possible eat at the empty bar seats (5) - she said “no”. I then asked if we could add a stool to the end of the booth to give us more room - she said “no”. Then I enquired if it was possible to ask the ‘walk ins’ with no booking - a group of 3 who just arrived in front of us and who were seated to a much larger table - to move to the booth, the manager said “no”. I then asked if it was possible to put two empty single tables together, I was told “no, they are for walk-ins” - absolutely preposterous given that the restaurant closed at 3pm and here we were at 220pm given inconsiderate and unacceptable options to accommodate physical size. How is this acceptable, when there were clearly several empty seats and table options to seat us. I put this down to someone wielding power over us. My nephew asked the manager “what solution can you give us” - she pointed to the tiny booth and said “this is your table”. Put simply, the female manager was rude and unaccomodating and couldn’t give a toss about what we had so looked forward to coming from Australia. We left the restaurant as no options were provided - she’d rather see us leave than give us an empty table that we could comfortably sit at. Is this how you run your...
