At the Surbiton Grind

A cappuccino please

To have out?

(Why do you think I'm buying your overpriced coffee? To sit down for a bit, of course. Can't you see I am tired and overweight?)

No, to have in.

(In a flat, expressionless voice) We only have paper cups. . .

OK.

And a ginger biscuit, please.

. . .

The ginger biscuit was the best I have ever had. My mouth, throat and stomach are still warm from it. The biscuit alone made going to this cafe worth it.

. . .

I get up and order another coffee. A latte this time.

That was the foamiest coffee I have ever had.

I think you'll find cappuccinos are foamy.

Yes, but this was so foamy that I could have had a foam bath in it.

.

So where are you from?

South Africa by way of many other places. And you?

(Indignantly) I am from here.

Really? From Surbiton?

No, from Hampshire.

In Hampshire hurricanes hardly ever happen.

I think you'll find we don't get many hurricanes in England.

.

You seem to have a lot of loyal clients.

Yes, we are very busy. Avoids my eyes.

(Meaning, drink your coffee and sod off.)

I look around. Everyone in the coffee bar is white - on the border between Tolworth and Surbiton!

Maybe they were also...

My wife and I went to this beautiful ,neat ,clean and attractive EUROPEAN type BISTRO cafe today. We,were met immediately, with a huge smile by a young lady .Our food order was taken with a beaming smile and served very pleasantly. We ,were overjoyed at the beautiful ,clean food and drinks .We ,were asked if there was anything else they could do for us.It ,was truly unbelievable that the service was just magnificent. We ,met the owner Johnny and his pleasant hard working smiling young wife .It was so so nice to have had such a fantastic happy experience today with such lovely clean food ,such an attractive happy atmosphere witnessed, too .The ,charge was very reasonable too. We,shall always recommend this lovely experience we had ,today.Looking, forward to the...

I’ve just started coming to this cafe, the first time I came a couple of things I wanted weren’t available which didn’t matter too much as I chose something else. Although the most recent time I got the açai bowl, it came out like liquid and I literally had to drink it with a straw. It’s supposed to be like a smoothie texture but it was runny more like a drink. We asked and we’re told the blender is broken and doesn’t make it the texture it’s supposed to be. I don’t mind not having it but if the blender is broken and it wasn’t going to be possible to eat I would have rather they just said at the beginning and I would have chosen something else. It also didn’t come with the golden syrup or almond butter like stated...

A very nice local cafe, with beautiful decor. I went there to have a cup of tea and pastries. As we walked in we were welcomed by the staff who were really nice and helpful. As the cafe was full we decided to sit outside which was nice and comfortable too. As for the tea, it was one of the nicest tea I’ve had, it was really good. However the pastries were a bit dry and hard. Overall it was a nice experience, will definitely visit again.

The Surbitonian Grind is a day to night coffee shop/ wine bar with humorous and irreverent decor, hard to miss on the Ewell Road! Lovely staff, great coffee, cake and bread with a buzzing environment. Can be a little loud at times but patrons manage to work on their laptops anyway. Lovely local bulletin board shows that it’s a hub for the local community. Look forward to the opening of their new shop on Claremont Rd!
