Eating Korean raw marinated crab in London! After weeks of seeing gejang (fermented crab condiment) go viral online with roe, rice and gim (roasted seaweed strips) mixed in and salivating over the food – I searched around to find a restaurant that served this dish and VOILA! P surprised me with a booking here and we travelled for a four hour round trip for this date night (that’s dedication - thank u for going all that way for me to try ONE dish, luckily I loved it) 🫰🏽🦀🌶️ it was SO WORTH IT!!! JIN GO GAE (@jingogaeuk) in Rayne’s Park/New Malden is a popular Korean restaurant situation just off from Koreatown. Access via South Wimbledon station (and take the 131 bus to Kingston and stop off at Shannon Corner/Cavendish Avenue), via Rayne’s Park or New Malden station. WE ORDERED: → Kimchi - £2.90 → Tteokbokki - Korean rice cakes - £10 → Gae-jang - Korean raw marinated crab in chilli, spicy sauce - £15 → Doenjang Jjigae - Fermented Korean soy bean soup in seafood broth w/ soft tofu - £9.90 → Pajeon - Squid pancake with spring onions and crab sticks - £9.50 → Galbi Jjim - Sweet beef short rib soup steamed with soy sauce, carrot and mooli £12.90 Yangnyeom chikin - Korean fried chicken drizzled in sweet, chilli sauce - £9.90 for half Hot Korean sake - £12 Maesil-ju - Sweet green plum wine - £12 #mukbang #koreanfood #londonfood #londonrestaurants #koreatown #food #dinner #foodtour #seafood #spicyfood #asianfood #rawmarinatedcrab

Review after second visit 2 years later: This time we thoroughly enjoyed the food. They sell the spicy raw crab (게장/Gejang) which was fresh and full of flavour. Samgyeopsal (belly pork) bbq was also tender and juicy. Recommended to arrive early (before 5.30pm) to get a table or book otherwise be prepared to wait in line. A queue was forming by 6.30pm but the ladies try to find a table for you as soon as possible. It's a very popular restaurant in the area and jam packed busy on Sunday night. Yes service is short and the ladies are very busy. They'll help you bbq the food and serve your food, and that's about it. But we've accepted that's just how it is. ------------------- We had a small group weekend booking and while we were there, the restaurant seemed quite busy and popular. Food was not as good as expected. BBQ meats were not as juicy and tender and the tiger prawns were not fresh (powdery texture). Charcoal BBQ didn't really enhance the food, rather it just made the entire restaurant really smokey so you smelt like a chimney when you walk out the restaurant (the smoke will also stick to your clothes/coat). Starters came at the same time as the BBQ being set up. "Service" consisted of taking your order, cooking the food on the BBQ, replacing the BBQ plate - that's it. Empty plates (after you have eaten the starters) or bottles of beer or dirty plates were not removed until after you have paid and is leaving so the dinner table was quite cluttered during your meal. Overall, decent pricing although for the same price, there are better restaurants with fresher meats and seafood around the area.

I used to hold this Korean restaurant in high regard. While the complimentary side dishes (ban chan) are still a nice touch, the quality of the meats has significantly declined. The restaurant uses coal for their Korean BBQ, which sounds great in theory, but the lack of flame meant the meats were slowly cooking on the grill, missing that essential charred flavour. Our order: ⭕️ Galbi Tang: Their famous beef short rib soup was mild in flavour, though it had a generous portion of meat. It was comforting but lacked the depth and richness I was hoping for. The broth was clear and hearty with a good meat-to-broth ratio. ⭕️ Tteokbokki: The rice cakes in spicy sauce had good, authentic flavours. However, the dish was heavy on onions and only had a couple of pieces of fishcake, which felt a bit unbalanced. The vibrant red sauce promised heat and flavour, but the imbalance in ingredients was a letdown. ❌ Korean BBQ (King Rib and Pork Belly): The quality of the meat was poor. The king rib was chewy and lacked tenderness, while the pork belly was very standard. The slow cooking on the grill didn’t help, leaving the meats underwhelming. Visually, the BBQ meats on the grill missed the appealing char you usually forward to with KBBQ, leading to a presentation that didn’t quite match the expected flavours. I wouldn’t recommend visiting for Korean BBQ, but some of the cooked dishes might still be worth trying if you’re in the area. Saying this, it’s no longer worth making a special trip.

Booked a table for 2 in advance which was pointless as they don't even bother reserving you a table. They didn't check or care if we reserved a table despite telling them and just kept asking us for how many people, so don't expect to be prioritised over walk-in customers.

The service was absolutely terrible. Rude waitresses who kept rushing us throughout our entire meal and constantly asking if we've finished when you can clearly see we haven't and still with our cutlery in hand. It wasn't busy and there were still tables available/noone waiting for a table. Eventually, we decided to just take the rest of the food home and asked for 2 take-away containers. The waitress cleared our table quickly and told us we can't take away the noodles for whatever reason before bringing us 1 box for the rest of the pancake. We then asked if she could get us another pair of chopsticks so I can finish it instead since she had taken ours and she just sighed and rolled her eyes at us... we would of needed it to put the pancakes in the box anyway. Surely you would clear the tables after your customers have packed all their food first and also saves you another trip. We asked another waitress if we could get another box for the noodles and she didn't say we couldn't take it away so I'm not sure what that was about. But it was the first waitress who came over with that second box and just chucked it on our table along with the bill! Totally rude and unacceptable! Like who even does that?! Absolutely no reason for it either.

Food was average, unfortunately not as good as it use to be and overpriced. You can find better elsewhere for less. Overall a very disappointing, frustrating and uncomfortable experience. Do not recommend this place and we'll be taking our custom elsewhere...

This was our first visit to Jin Go Gae but we can be considered veteran Korean foodies for the most part around the streets of New Malden. Having read the largely positive reviews, I was quietly optimistic that this place would deliver, as we brought another family with us, eight persons altogether.

Upon entering the premises, my first impressions were that the deco is quietly elegant, place is fairly spacious and it did not feel cramped, unlike some restaurants on the other side of New Malden.

Food wise, I am glad to say that the restaurant delivered for the most part. Dishes ranged from exceptional and very good, to good enough. None of the dishes we ordered were below par in my humble opinion.

We ordered Korean pancake (pajeon), fried chicken in sweet/spicy sauce (kan poon gi), beef stew (kalbi jjim), a beef soup dish (kalbitang) and a spicy seafood soup with noodles.

The highlights here were the first three -- especially the pancake, which was fried exceptionally crispy, with not too much batter and had the appropriate amount seafood ingredients. Fried chicken and beef stew were very good and both kids and adults lapped it all up with fervour. The beef soup could have done with more salt but on the whole, its light and neutral taste balanced out the heavier, more intense flavours of the other dishes well. Both beef dishes were cooked just right, with the texture of the beef juicily tender (but not falling apart). The seafood dish was not a standout but it was good enough and the even the fussy kids seem to like it.

Overall, we all agreed that the food was well worth it and we would come back. Even for the fussy eaters in the group had good...

Food was generally good but service was poor. I left just feeling pretty frustrated. When ordering things it felt like it was going to be expensive but all-in-all it actually came out alright (bar the "extra" item talked about later)

We had to grab somebodies attention to get any order in ever, no first drinks only order ever happened and it had been about 15 minutes until we even saw anybody and that was who we grabbed to make an order. They were clearly about to head to the back again after taking some dishes to another table. By this point we were ready for a whole food order. We ordered 3 BBQ items (and a bunch of other things naturally) and 2 only came for the first 30 mins or so along with everything else. We grabbed somebody again after we'd got through everything served, to remind them we'd ordered this 3rd item. It arrived in a few minutes, and then about 5 minutes later the original 3rd item arrived in tow - and yes, we got charged twice. Sending back felt like more work that it was worth given the pretty grumpy attitude we were met with - not all granted, one of the ladies there was super friendly.

It was not overly busy when we went on a Wednesday, less than half full, yet the 4/5 FOH staff we saw were either rushing around always or when serving others did an admirable job of totally ignoring us even when trying to get their attention. Twice, we had to literally get up and order from somebody in the back area.

I suspect on a weekday they heavily focus on delivery orders, I'm sure if I'd ordered food from them I'd be happy with the quality.

I won't be going back again in a hurry, but for Korean BBQ, I'm sure you could do...
