What should have been a culinary journey from Mexico to Patagonia instead felt like a half-hearted stroll through a tired street-food market on a grey Tuesday afternoon.
Let’s start with the space, which, as a rule, feels like a Londoner’s nightmare of commuting multiplied. When your close-pressed neighbors are a bit quirky, as they often are in these places, every accidental jab becomes a fraught exercise in British restraint.
The food. The ‘corn five ways’ was, presumably, meant to illustrate the versatility of this noble crop; instead, it seemed like a punishment for some corn-related crime. A soggy cornbread, and a pile of something that looked like corn purée but tasted as if it had never met a grain of salt.
Then there was the salad, a sad pile of iceberg lettuce adorned with a single purple flower, as if someone had glanced at a magazine photo of fine dining and thought, ‘That’ll do.’ I assure you, it will not do. Putting a flower on an iceberg lettuce does not transform it into a salad; it merely adds a layer of insult to the indifferent crunch of one of nature’s least inspiring vegetables.
The main course, a steak, was actually decent—reasonably cooked, well-seasoned. But for some reason, it arrived on a plate crowded with both chicken and pork, as though the chef wanted to make absolutely sure we got our protein, regardless of our preferences.
And then, dessert. What might have been a small highlight turned out to be the evening’s saddest moment: a lone dollop of chocolate ice truffle on a bed of what could only be Nesquick powder.
If you’re looking to sit in a tube carriage, go ahead. If you’re looking to experience the vibrant flavors of Latin America, perhaps take the Central...
Read moreUnlike other London experiences, this isn’t contrived themed night out with tube themed cocktail names, and character waiters, etc. it’s simply a dining course experience hosted in a repurposed Victoria line train. It’s very instagrammable but once you’ve got the photos out the way, everyone seemed switched off and enjoyed the dining experience. You can opt for a supper club style sharing table or you own private table for 2. We opted for the latter. Aside from the food, there is no glitz or glamour, the toilets are in cabins and given the freezing January temperatures, you need to brave the elements. The food was excellent and even had things I didn’t think I would like but ended up enjoying. Obviously it’s a rotating guest chef / menu but the 6 course Latin / Colombian theme is what we had and we would recommend having. The service was also really good and staff were engaging. They get people want photos and do that at the start so people can then enjoy the food experience. It took a while to be served (mainly because some guests were late) but once food started coming it wasn’t long waits between courses.
If you are thinking of coming, be prepared that it isn’t near Walthamstow Central underground station and Walthamstow is surprisingly quite spread out. The nearest station is St James and even that’s a walk away. We live relatively locally and we had to get a cab. I am not aware of any local pub or bar immediately closeby for you to make a whole evening of coming to Stow but to bastardise Michelin, it’s certainly “worth a detour” to check out...
Read moreGreat experience, we thoroughly enjoyed. You are dining inside an old Victoria line tube carriage, with a South American inspired tasting menu. I was glad the food was actually good and not gimmicky based on the setting. The chef comes out to explain the food concept for the evening, and there’s further notes for each course which is nice. The food was really nice, we enjoyed all the courses. The seating is either on the big sharing table, or your own table for 2/3 people. The 2/3 person tables are first come first served, most of these are on actual old tube seats, but there’s a couple are just normal tables in the door area. The service is okay, they are friendly but it’s hard to catch them to order more drinks etc as often they are all busy serving everyone’s food. We actually ended up paying for an extra drink which never arrived due to this patchy drinks service (forgot to double check the bill until we got home). Would be good to have one person dedicated on taking peoples drinks orders and serving them as this felt a bit chaotic. The location is quite far if you’re not local. It’s a 20 minute walk from the closest tube stations, and there’s not much...
