Tavernaki Portobello is a hidden gem on the bustling Portobello Road in London, offering a taste of authentic Greek cuisine in a charming and lively atmosphere. From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by the warm hospitality of the staff and transported to the heart of Greece. The restaurant's décor is simple yet elegant, with whitewashed walls, terracotta tiles, and traditional Greek lanterns, creating an inviting and welcoming ambiance.
The menu at Tavernaki Portobello features a wide array of traditional Greek dishes, all prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I started my meal with the feta cold appetizer, which was a refreshing and flavorful delight. The feta cheese was creamy and tangy, perfectly complemented by the Kalamata olives and fresh vegetables.
For my main course, I opted for the lamb and chicken skewers, which were cooked to perfection and seasoned to perfection. The lamb was tender and flavorful, while the chicken was juicy and succulent. Each bite was a burst of deliciousness.
To top off my meal, I indulged in the baklava, a classic Greek dessert that is always a crowd-pleaser. The flaky layers of phyllo dough were filled with a sweet and nutty filling, and the honey syrup added a touch of sweetness.

The Greek cuisine served here is nothing short of exceptional. Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and made with the utmost care. One dish that stood out to me was the honey feta filo. The combination of the crispy filo pastry, the creamy feta cheese, and the drizzle of honey on top was a match made in culinary heaven. It was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, and I found myself savoring every bite.
The quality of the ingredients used in each dish was evident, and it truly elevated the overall dining experience. The flavors were authentic and reminded me of the incredible Greek food I had while traveling in Greece. It was clear that the chefs here take great pride in their craft and pay attention to every detail.
What truly made this dining experience exceptional was the impeccable service provided by Alex. His friendly demeanor and genuine passion for his job were evident, and it made our time at the restaurant all the more enjoyable.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a charming Greek-inspired decor that transported us straight to the Mediterranean. The attention to detail in the ambiance added to the overall experience and made us feel like we were dining in a traditional Greek taverna.
In conclusion, I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. Read moreI visited with my boyfriend at 7pm on Friday to celebrate our anniversary. I had been following the restaurant on Instagram for about a year and had high expectations from what I had seen online. We were given a lovely little table in the back, underneath a tree, which made the spot feel intimate in an otherwise vibrant atmosphere. Our waiter and all of the other staff were very friendly, helpful and polite. We ordered some crispy fried squid and a type of sausage as starters, which came very quickly and were delicious to share. The real stars of the show were the main courses, however. My boyfriend ordered the meatballs and I ordered the kleftiko, having heard good things from others. Again, both arrived quickly and I was blown away by the absolutely delicious slow cooked lamb dish. We finished up with the kormos and portokalopita for dessert. I'm usually underwhelmed by restaurant desserts but wow these were something else! I'd love to try making one of these myself at home but I don't imagine I could do it justice. The chefs here are making pure magic. All in all we paid just under £40 each, which felt like a bargain for some of the most delicious food in London. While I don't have much Greek food to compare to, I can only assume that this is the real deal as we could hear many of the other guests were Greek themselves. We're already planning to come back soon, and I'll be recommending this place to...
