šĀ Canning Town šŗĀ Ā£4.30 Amstel
The Grandest Pub In Plaistow.
The Abbey is located on a busy intersection on Barking Road at the southern end of Plaistow. The nearest Tube is Canning Town, itās a fifteen minute walk to get here.
This pub was originally built in 1742 and started life as a Coaching Inn called The Crown. It was re-built by Taylor Walker in 1882 and called The Abbey Arms, now simplified to The Abbey.
This is a large bright and airy one bar pub that originally had four separate rooms. At the centre is the servery which has a solid wood counter and a traditional back bar. On the left hand side is a dartboard and a number of poser tables, to the right is a raised seating area that leads around to the pool table that sits below an atrium. This pub also has a Fives dartboard which is a rare site these days. Around the walls are a few framed West Ham shirts plus old black and white photos of Plaistow in years gone by. At the back of the pub is a partially covered beer garden.
The beer line up was straightforward mainstream beers but no cask. I decided on an Amstel, my pint was great, like most pubs in Plaistow, it cost south of a fiver. This pub doesnāt serve food but BJās Pie & Mash is just down the road if youāre feeling peckish.
I arrived around 2.30pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon in September. The pub was fairly busy with an upbeat and lively atmosphere. The punters were predominantly fifty somethings discussing how well West Ham were doing at the time. There are four screens dotted around the pub which had the horse racing on, the soundtrack was a chilled rock and pop playlist.
The pub hosts regular Karaoke and Live Music nights, you can also watch Live Premier League games here also.
This is a lovely old Victorian pub and I can see why it was the busiest in the area. Pubs attract people in different ways, whether itās architecture and decor, family and friends or just good old fashioned hospitality, it was all in abundance here. If youāre ever over this manor, be sure to visit The Abbey.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreCash only pub. We came here on St. Patrickās Day and had a fun afternoon. Great Guinness! We were also offered some complementary stew which was delicious (but not vegetarian) - treat for St Patrick's... otherwise no food here at all, only crisps. The music list was good; however, the acoustics were awful. We all felt so relieved when we stepped outside, as we felt like we were going deaf inside the pub due to poor sound quality & loudness. The pub itself was quite spacious with a small beer garden at the back which wouldāve been much nicer without parked cars in there. Friendly and efficient staff. Good vibe. Children are allowed on premises...
