We have come here for years, since back in the days in 2009 when this was a lovely little pub. Also in 2023 we've been here multiple times for food and drinks. But I have to say: today's experience was absolutely shocking. Whilst the service was friendly and the atmosphere was great, the food is so far off the standards. It's getting worse and worse unfortunately whereas pricing keep going up! A pint of beer for £9? Okay, it's London... but still. Much worse was actually the food. Look at the photo attached: the price for this "burger" was £18.95. Can you believe this? And much worse than that: it consists only out of 3 ingredients: a cheap white roll, a patty, some penny-worth iceberg lettuce. That's it. Apparently there was cheese on it, but we couldn't find it. No tomato, no sauce, just simply NOTHING. At McDonalds you pay £1 for it and at least get some gherkins, onions, proper cheese. This wasn't even the worst thing: The kids burger cost £8.95, which is probably half-way reasonable. But it was EXACTLY (like literally EXACTLY) the same burger with EXACTLY the same fries. Only difference: the fries where not placed in a copper cup for the kids, but placed on the plate directly. Same amount, same fries, same burger - but £10 cheaper. We asked the waitress and she kindly explained that there was no error, she went through the order again and admitted that she was also struggling to find any difference other than the fries not being put in a copper cup.
We were 8 persons and noone of us won't come back. No way. I always loved The Anglers and have spend probably hundreds if not thousand Pounds here every year... It's a shame. If I was Fullers I would try to intervene here, as one of their best horses in the stall is going south and losing customers.
Again, look at the photo! Additionally, this burger was so incredibly small. Everyone was left hungry, but with that disappointment we decided not to have pudding and to leave the restaurant. I have NEVER, NOWHERE paid £18.95 for a burger. Maybe I did once, but got like Wagyu beef, molten blue cheese, crispy onions, halloumi and whatnot on my patty.... at The Anglers? == Iceberg lettuce.
PS: In all fairness: Atmosphere is great, service is great, drinks are great, location is great. But holy crap, what has happened to your...
Read moreThis was my first time here, but I knew I was in for a treat when I saw this Google maps page. I've been leading social bike rides for many years, and always have to find a congenial place for refreshments that suits all palates and dietary requirements. As such, I was sure that the Anglers would meet my more modest needs on Sunday 1 October, when we were but two people. I'd particularly like to thank Sarah and Vish, our hosts, for making our visit so special. They, along with all the rest of the staff, went out of their way to look after us. We were starving, and expected a long delay before a table for lunch became available, as the garden was rammed with happy people having a really good time. Imagine our delight when we were given a table immediately! It's just a shame that the food was a little disappointing - when you are promised a rare brand of beef, roasted pink, it's a shame when it arrives covered by a dark but otherwise nondescript gravy, so you couldn't see the colour. It had the rather sad taste of something that had been sitting under hot lights for too long, so I have (reluctantly) to deduct a star, as the vegetables were also desiccated. Oh for a gravy boat to apply the stuff when and where needed! The booze was beyond reproach though, and much appreciated. I enjoyed my Cornish Gold cider, and my request for Calvados was met with some surprise, but Vish soon located it on his trusty tablet, and very good it was too! Deanna, who brought this nectar to me said she had never brought a drink she couldn't pronounce before, and I was happy to enlighten her. After "testing the nose" told me she now has to take matters one step further - and you never forget your first taste of Calvados! Take a bow, Pere Magloire. I look forward to my next visit, when I hope this place won't be as busy as it was on what was probably the last Sunday of...
Read moreOh dear, not a good experience at this pub for lunch today. It started well - we were greeted and seated promptly, and someone took our drinks orders. The pub “garden” is expansive and could do with a little more colour, or at least they could cover up some of the clean up areas, but everyone seemed friendly and there was a nice atmosphere.
Then everything went astray. The kitchen clearly could not keep up with food orders, and we (and everyone around us) waited for over an hour to eat. After 25 mins we asked where our starter was (just bread), which was then brought out. When our mains finally arrived, one meal had been totally forgotten. It became apparent this had happened to every single table order, not just ours. (A tech issue?) The waitress disappeared, not to be seen again, possibly hiding inside in embarrassment. We waited 10 more minutes before giving up and going over to ask someone else, and had to wait a further 10 minutes or so before the missing food finally appeared.
The food itself was ok, standard pub menu, nothing special - though I did appreciate the gluten free burger bun.
When we came to pay, they gave us 50% off the food, but it was a little too late. Plus we've realised since leaving that they charged us for the bread twice. The staff (who were all lovely to be fair) should have been empowered or instructed to be more proactive in their communications from the beginning. I.e. Tell your guests there will be a bit of a wait when they order to set expectations, and then be upfront about the error with the ordering system and automatically offer the guest a free drink. Come back to apologise and check on them… don’t disappear!
Probably won’t come again but I appreciate there have been other good reviews so perhaps it was genuinely...
