On the 28th July we visited this establishment. The Head waiter was oddly catty and was pushing to remove us from our reserved table until it became apparent that we were not moving from the nice view we wanted. Then the food was appalling, the salmon starter the couple of slices of bread, dry and curld with a few square slices dumped unceremoniously it's lucky salmons flavour is hard to destroy and the balance of non salmon ingredients felt like a economy exercise because it was not a elegance one. The Lobster was much the same a flavourless mess apart from being bitter saying they are poor at dispatching. The hake was a little better but again hard to get wrong without it being sent back. Everything felt like it was preped poorly days in advance. They then missed taking our cocktail order because we had the audacity to not want a third badly produced course. And then the final nail in the coffin was the catty one sent the most worried little girl waitress over with the lie that our bill had it's 20% discount pre applied. I believe we made the mistake of polightly checking on the way in that we could use it with the set menu and this is the justification for the catty ones actions, the food and the staffs abruptness I fear.
It's a shame such a terrible establishment is in this wonderful location. I was hoping to have the excuse visit regularly when I sat down by the time I had the starter I was feeling like a inconvenience and by the time I left I was having to bite my tongue at the treatment that stemmed from the catty head waiter and his obvious judgment of me and my partner. Obviously he back stabbed his way to this lofty position but thank God he will never make it to being a true maître d'. Best I think he moves to a call centre, low middle management, from what I hear he would fit that exalted position much better. Or maybe sales assistant in...
Read moreValentine's Day date, my first visit and very enjoyable.
Kudos to the fabulous Barbara who greeted and entertained us, I'm sure that she could hold her own in a duet with the function band that provided background entertainment.
Service was very good and the waiters were attentive, efficient and apologetic (oysters were off the menu).
It was a special Valentine's Day set menu and it all looked appertizing.
My beetroot cured salmon with quail eggs was divine and my wife's foie gras was smooth and flavourfull. My beef Wellington was one of the best that I have eaten; slightly pink and melted in the mouth.
Only gripes:
The menu didn't specify that the monkfish came with a tasty looking langustine on the side; my wife is mildly alergic to crustaceans. The waiter assured us that none was in the sauce so we just moved it onto my plate (mmmmm tasty).
Desert: I had the lemon tart which came with a strawberry sorbet and my wife had the Chocolate truffle with the raspberry sorbet.
My strawberry sorbet was soft and creamy as a sorbet should be. My wife's raspberry sorbet was not. It was glistening with ice crystals and you could tap it with a spoon without making a dent in it; it had obviously melted at some point and then refrozen.
We brought it to the waiters attention; not as a complaint but as a suggestion that it not be served to other patrons as it spoiled what would have been an excellent desert.
The waiter hurried off to the kitchen and soon returned and stated that "the kitchen agrees that the raspberry sorbet was below par".
After five minutes I was dismayed to see a procession of waiters serving the very same desert with ice crystals glistening from the sorbet to unsuspecting patrons; perhaps some people like crunchy watery sorbet?
All in all it was a good experience and I will visit again if only to try the haggis scotch egg from the a...
Read moreThe Wharf made our wedding party absolutely amazing. It was the best experience we have ever had, it will stay with us forever. From the first conversations with Barbara - she made it all so easy. She listened to what we wanted to achieve, she helped make the best recommendations on the food and wine and for all the little extra details like the party lights, pianist etc, she made sure I had the contact details to hand. Any small changes weren't a problem at all for her and she always made sure I had the latest plan sent back to me promptly. On the day the venue looked absolutely stunning and exactly how we had planned it. The staff were incredible, the Manager for the evening made sure we had a drink in our hands all night; whether that was a glass of champagne or a glass of water. The food was absolutely incredible, and the staff ensured everyone's food was served promptly and pipping hot. The compliments from our guests on the food and the venue flooded in afterwards, they couldn't rate it highly enough. The bar staff were also brilliant and no one had to wait for their next G&T or beer! We can't thank everyone at The Wharf enough for making our day so special - especially Barbara, for making the whole organisation so easy. We definitely know where we will be celebrating our wedding anniversaries for...
