🚇 Kew Bridge 🍺 £6.25 Amstel

The Bell & Crown is located on the banks of the Thames in Chiswick West London. The nearest station is Kew Bridge, I got the train to Gunnersbury which has better connections.

This riverside pub, licensed as the Bell & Crown by 1787, was acquired by Fuller, Smith & Turner in 1814 and rebuilt in 1907. The pub expanded into two adjoining shops in the 1980s, with the large conservatory extension added in 1984.

There are two ways to enter the pub, you can either enter on the main Thames Road entrance or the Strand on the Green entrance by the river. Once inside, you’ll find a traditional one bar pub with a cosy atmospheric feel. The pub is divided into three sections, there is a good size main bar area which has a long servery, a bright and airy conservatory and a terrace overlooking the Thames. Along the path by the river are plenty of benches and chairs to watch the world go by.

This Fullers pub has a good selection of familiar well known beers which included three cask ales. I decided on a pint of Amstel, my pint was excellent, price point was just above average. There is a classic pub grub menu available, Fish & Chips costs £19.50, roasts are available on a Sunday.

I arrived at 2pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon in May. The main bar was fairly quiet as the majority of punters were sat outside soaking up the glorious sunshine. There was a good mix of punters who were either here for a beer or a nice spot of lunch in the conservatory and on the terrace. The atmosphere was laidback with minimal effort required to settle in. The service was pleasant, the team member who served me was welcoming and courteous.

Visiting the @bellcrownw4 was a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxed pub experience. I loved the stroll along the Thames to get here, the historic building, the country pub feel in the main bar and the beer was sensibly priced. There are five excellent pubs along this stretch of the river, The Bell & Crown is definitely one of my favourites.

We tried to keep it as simple as possible ordering 3 fish and chips. We asked for one to have the chips on the side as those were meant to be for our daughter.

The first server was really rude acting like he was doing us the greatest favour in the world.

5 minutes later, after he took our order, we saw him going outside with a beer, so clearly his problem was being in a rush as his shift was over...

Anyway.

We got two fish and chips with chips on the side (so the first server were clearly not even listening).

The chips were actually fries...

Whomever cooked the fish took too long to deep it into the oil, as one side (the first they put in the oil) of it was way more cooked than the rest, and the tip of the tail was left with almost no batter at all. The fish itself was decent, but overall overdone with (as mention above) one side completely inedible and stone rock.

The oil was clearly not fresh, and the fish cooked not at the right temperature, as the initial crispiness disappeared after few biters to leave us with something soggy, and trust me, I'm not a slow eater.

The tartare sauce was nice, but with the vegetables inside unevenly cut.

The side of peas were decent but overly seasoned.

It was busy for a Tuesday evening, but I'd expect better from a company who claim to be better than its rival from Green King, M&B or...

The Bell and Crown in Chiswick is an absolute gem of a pub. Nestled on the picturesque Strand-on-the-Green, near Kew Bridge, it offers an impeccable service experience with incredibly friendly staff who make you feel right at home. The interior is stunning, filled with historical artifacts that give it a rich, charming character. The food here is top-notch, with a menu that caters to a variety of tastes, including excellent vegan options. The prices are quite reasonable. What truly sets this pub apart is its gorgeous setting. From the windows, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Thames River, watching people stroll, jog, or sail by. It’s a serene and delightful scene, perfect for a relaxing visit. An added bonus is that they accept the Chiswick Calendar Card for discounts, making it even more attractive. I thoroughly enjoy every visit to the Bell and Crown and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic pub experience in West London and a delicious breakfast with a picturesque view. I came back to this lovely pub today for a coffee, knowing they have my favorite oat milk, Oatly. It’s a peaceful setting with the friendliest and most welcoming staff. Always a pleasure to return.

Visit 1: £16 for a tiny blant fish pie which had an ounce of fish and literally 1 tiny shrimp. I was genuinely shocked when it was served, I thought it was a joke. Visit 2, 6 months later ( because everyone deserves a second chance, right?): Sunday morning, we came in for breakfast. The bartender said he just needs to make a couple of coffees and will be right with me and my 2 year old. 20 minutes later the bartender was busy doing his own thing and a queue formed around the bar. Another bartender came out and started taking orders from the people behind us in the queue. My toddler wasn't feeling well and I had no energy to argue. By the time we had our order taken we had no time for breakfast and just ordered a coffee and a babyccino. We went back to our table in the Cobbles bar and the first bartender kicked us out because we didn't order any food (for just drinks you are supposed to use the outside tables). These people literally have no notion of hospitality/customer services, it's all about following *the rules*.
