šŸš‡Ā Plaistow šŸŗĀ Ā£5.80 Cruzcampo A Legendary Plaistow Boozer. The Black Lion is located in the heart of Plaistow E13. The nearest Tube is Plaistow, it’s a five minute walk to get here. This historic pub was originally built over 600 years ago. It was rebuilt in 1747 and remodelled again in 1875. Regular visitors in the 1960's were the West Ham team, including world cup trio of Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst. There is also a connection to Dick Turpin who stabled Black Bess in the stables here. This is a classic two bar oldschool pub that oozes old world charm. The bar on the right is split level and has Tudor beams and original exposed brickwork walls. The servery is a longun’ and stretches down the length of the bar. The seating is a mix of long velour upholstered benches with matching stools around circular tables. The smaller back bar is accessible by a separate door or through the end of the main bar. This bar is a cosier affair with a red carpet and comfy banquettes. In both bars is some superb memorabilia, you’ll find a photo of Bobby Moore, Warren Mitchell and Kenny Lynch propping up the bar here.There is also a picture of Canning Town born Terry Spinks who was the youngest Olympic gold medallist in British boxing history. The beer line up will please most, there is a good choice of mainstream beers with two cask ales. I decided on a pint of Cruzcampo, my pint was excellent, price point was average. There is a classic home cooked pub food menu available, Fish & Chips costs Ā£13.00. There is also a seafood stall in the carpark next to the pub, I had some peeled prawns with plenty of pepper and vinegar for Ā£4. We arrived bang on opening time at 12pm on mild Friday lunchtime in February. I was with die hard @westham fan and fellow pub enthusiast @scottyboy who knows a thing or two about pubs around this manor. As you can imagine the pub was quiet as we were the first ones in. There are a few screens dotted around the pub which had Sky Sports on in the background. The service was great, the barman was welcoming and was happy for me to take a few photos. This is a legendary pub which is steeped in folklore, history and is a favourite amongst the West Ham faithful. I absolutely loved visiting this pub, this is a proper London pub experience. If there was ever a reason to head out east, then visiting The Black Lion is definitely one of them. ā„¹ļø Info correct on visiting 23.02.24

Absolutely fantastic place. One of the last, if not THE last proper old East London pub. Run by a top Irish landlord and his family. Proper topnotch Guinness served here no less and at least one or two well-kept guest cask ales along with a massive range of whiskies (Scottish, Irish, Welsh, blended, and others) The food is amazing. (I've always gone for home made Steak and ale pie with either mash or chips and fresh veg with gravy.) It's really good value, and they serve large portions. Keeps you full all day for sure. All fresh and homemade, it seems and tastes like a lot of care has gone into making it to, and they are proud to serve you (the food and drinks). Always get a nice warm welcome, and the locals all seem friendly. However, this is a quiet, relaxed place most times I've been in, which is a welcome change. Although I imagine a fun and buzzing atmosphere for a big horse race or football match being shown. Bar snacks also served, of course, including Black Country pork scratchings. Will always return here when possible. Hidden gem. Long live the Black Lion.

The Black Lion Pub truly captures the essence of a typical British pub, making it a delightful experience from the moment you step inside. As soon as you enter, the cosy and welcoming ambience instantly gives you that warm feeling, making it perfect for both regulars and newcomers alike.

What sets this pub apart is its strong connection with the locals. It's evident that the place is a hub for the community, where friends gather and stories are shared. The friendly chatter and the sense of camaraderie create a lively atmosphere that's hard to resist.

One of the highlights of The Black Lion is its spacious garden at the back. It provides a lovely outdoor seating area where you can enjoy the fresh air and relax with your favourite drink. It's an ideal spot, especially during pleasant weather, and adds to the pub's charm.

Speaking of drinks, this place has something for everyone. The extensive drink menu caters to various tastes, ranging from well-curated beers and ciders to a variety of other beverages. With such a diverse selection, you'll surely find your perfect drink to complement your evening.

The staff at The Black Lion Pub is nothing short of wonderful. They're not only efficient but also genuinely welcoming and attentive to the guests' needs. Their friendly demeanour contributes to the overall positive experience and makes you feel like a valued customer.

However, it's worth noting that the only downside to this otherwise exceptional pub is the drink prices. Some patrons have mentioned that the prices tend to be a bit higher compared to other pubs in the area. While the quality of the experience justifies it for many, it might be something to keep in mind for those on a tight budget.

Overall, The Black Lion Pub is a gem for those seeking an authentic British pub experience. With its inviting ambience, strong sense of community, spacious garden, wide range of drinks, and welcoming staff, it's a place where you can unwind and create lasting memories with friends and fellow locals. Just be prepared to splurge a bit more on your drinks, but trust that the experience will make it...

I visited the black lion pub some time ago. I was racially profiled, disability discriminated and totally degraded by the woman behind the bar. I walked in kindly asked the barwoman if I could use the WC as I was absolutely busting as I’d been stuck in traffic all day and suffer with prediabeties.

She then asked me about a mask but unfortunately, I can't wear a mask as I am officially exempt, referring to my exemption badge, she then said she has one of the those too, but she stills wears a mask. No one else in the pub was wearing a mask. I was more than happy to purchase a soft drink after using the loo, but after approximately two minutes in the loo, she came banging on the door of the Gents’ Toilets shouting in front of all the other patrons that she’s sick of you lot coming in here smoking crack and then walked off.

Obviously, I was unhappy by the fact that bar staff had accused me of being a (drug addict) let alone banging on the toilet door in front of all the patrons and making a scene. I must say, though, that it is indeed Ironic;

As I came out of the toilet, a patron was on his way to check on me, so it seems that the woman at the bar was talking about me to the patrons because I wanted to use the toilet. I don’t like to leave negative reviews but feel compelled to as even after nearly 2 hrs hour - I am totally shocked by the behaviour of this individual. I have been in the pub a few times but never seen the barwoman before, but this woman needs serious training on how to deal with people.

The woman totally invalidated my feelings and was smirking with the other customers and then told me that I should F -off because I've now used the toilet.

In my 44 years of life, I have never been so embarrassed, humiliated and disrespected, all because I wanted to use the toilet. This level of professionalism gives British pubs a bad name and should be stamped out. To think may pubs are suffering due to the COVID closures you should have better-trained staff who do not discriminate customers.

I now feel scared to enter the black lion pub for fear of further discrimination...
