Stopped at the George and Monkey for a swift couple of pints whilst travelling through the area. It was a Saturday early eve and we had tried some other nearby spots to no avail. However the George and Monkey had ample space inside and out to accommodate 2. A heater above the outside table made this an obvious choice for us. Pints were reasonably priced for location (c.£7) and there were some good looking deals advertised for midweek excursions to this pub. The eclectic interior leans heavily into the Monkey aspect of the name. I did not, on a brief examination, spot any Georges depicted on the walls here, but monkey references were evident and obvious.

For the uninitiated, this pub is steeped in history. The former Filthy McNasty’s Whiskey Tavern was a place to gather socially in the 80s and 90s that it’s hard to put into words. Extraordinary late night parties, a love of live music and literature, eccentrics and creatives at the bar and behind the bar, this was my favourite pub in London of all time. So many fond memories. Madonna came here. Gerry Adams is said to have had a beer here before heading to Downing Street for talks. In its’ heyday it had everything, including a Stanley Racing betting shop immediately opposite so you could go back and forth.

Beautiful pub, with a nice outside area. The George and the Monkey is a very decent place for a pint of beer in the sun, when the weather allows for it. The inside of the pub is very spacious and has nice and traditional wooden interior, themed around typical church/abbey type of decor. Stopping by in a quiet Saturday, the beautiful of the place was overshadowed by a wholly uninterested service staff, not making you feel particularly welcomed. Having been here a few times, it seems to be a general theme. So, with all that in mind, I’m not in any rush to return.

Oh The George and Monkey. This is one of the pubs where after the first pint you can't stop wondering how is it possible that it's not flooded with people. That's a blessing for us locals because it means that this hidden gem in South Islington can remain unspoilt and genuine. Located on beautiful Amwell street, this amazing pub is spacious and beautifully decorated with much attention to detail down to its bathrooms. There is a variety of drinks to choose from, craft beers, and the house pizza is simply delicious and affordable. In the summer you simply cannot pass by and not stop for a cold pint at the numerous tables out on the street. The winter might be even better because it means you sit in the cozy warm indoors where you can listen to indie rock music playing in the background while having a chat with the friendly and helpful staff working there. Closest tube station is Angel and it is even easier reachable by the numerous buses passing through either Pentonville road or Rosebury Avenue. To visit Amwell street and sit and relax for a pint or two at the George is an experience to...

Went there on a Saturday evening for pizza after hearing a lot about it! The pub was busy which is nice but as soon as we ordered I realised it was not gonna end well. The way they remember who ordered what is by you telling them “my table is the one at the corner” which is crazy considering all the people and tables in the pub. As expected 1.5 hours later, after we tried to ask for our pizza twice and got told “we’re busy but it’s coming”, the waiter told us that the pizzas got served a while ago but to a different table. Without any sign of them refunding our pizzas or making up for their terrible organisation, they finally served us our pizzas, which were average in the end.

Having table numbers or some sort of identification for orders seem to me such a basic thing in a pub. Would not go...

What a pleasant surprise of a pub!! Had the Sunday roast today & it was very, very good (~£16/chicken): came with parsnips, carrots, potatoes (probably 1 the best fluffiest potatoes I've had in a roast in London - crazy innit?!), 2 small Yorkshire puds, kale & gravy with an amazing amount of garlic & chunks of meat in it (!).

It wasn't busy at all at 230pm today, which makes no sense to me - there are busier Sunday pubs with awful roasts aplenty, & this 1 only had 4 tables seated (1 was a large group).

Service was a wee slow (there was only 1 guy at the bar & you had to order there), but everything else was pretty great. Even the tea & how it came out.

Would...
