The Lamb used to be a reliable place for a casual dinner, but it seems to be struggling in recent months. The staff themselves are lovely, but the table service has a lot of room for improvement. There is usually always a mix-up with orders, and more often than not a meal or drink turns out to be unavailable after ordering (and paying for) it. Again, the staff are friendly and apologetic, but it has to be noted that this is a common occurence. On one occasion recently, we were served our food, and were then left waiting 10 minutes whilst our server went to find us cutlery. The food doesn't usually arrive hot, so by the time we were able to eat it it had gone cold. I'm not sure why finding cutlery for two people would take so long. There is a general feeling that the staff are themselves bewildered, and that the kitchen is unorganised. We normally visit on weekday evenings, so it may be that the pub has less staff cover during these hours.
The food itself is okay, but I've seen a definite decline in quality over recent months whilst the price has stayed the same. The boar sausages are now very fatty and gristly, which definitely wasn't the case before. I suspect the mash being used is now from frozen, and is now no higher-quality than something you'd find in Tesco ready to microwave. The portion sizes have also become noticably more stingy, especially the chip sides as has also been noted in previous reviews. The fish and chips are advertised as coming with a side of minted mushy peas, but the last time we ordered it, we were served just plain regular peas without any warning. I understand it's ultimately still pub food, but it's a shame to see a noticable decline in quality whilst still paying the same prices.
I hope that management start to rethink and work on improving some key elements of the business, as we have found ourselves visiting The Lamb less frequently in recent months. I don't believe that it is still the "standout pub" that it advertises on...
Read moreLovely and clean bar, amazingly friendly, polite and welcoming staff, very nice quality food. Second visit update: I'm sorry to say that our most recent visit wasn't as pleasant as the one we had previously. We had a reservation for three people to celebrate my birthday, and I was genuinely looking forward to it—especially after such a lovely experience the last time.
However, things felt very different this time. When we arrived, although a few staff members were present on the floor, no one came to greet or receive us. There was no acknowledgment, not even eye contact, as we approached—which made us feel ignored and unwelcome. Eventually, we found our own table and sat down.
A gentleman who noticed us seated didn’t bring us menus until we specifically asked, and even then, only the food menu was provided. It left us wondering whether assumptions were being made about us based on appearance—perhaps deciding we wouldn't be drinking without even asking.
I ordered the mushroom on toast, which I’ve had and loved before, but this time the dish was disappointing—overcooked, nearly burnt, and lacking the usual quality and care. The food also took quite a long time to arrive, with little communication or warmth from the staff throughout.
When we went to the bar to pay, the experience continued in the same tone—no eye contact, no smile, no thank you. It all felt strangely cold and disconnected, especially for what was meant to be a celebratory meal.
What saddens me most is that I had just returned, excited to visit again because of how welcoming and enjoyable our previous visit was. It’s disappointing to see how much the quality of service and food has declined in just a couple of months.
I truly hope this feedback is taken constructively, because there is something very special about the place—but consistency in hospitality and attention to detail is what builds lasting trust...
Read moreWhat an unexpectedly terrible meal. We went for the Sunday Roast and almost got up and left after having to ask 3 different people for water. But let’s start at the very beginning, we were seated quite quickly but were not provided with menus - bit of a problem for people hoping to eat but oh well. We assumed, incorrectly, that someone would be by shortly to bring menus and possibly even provide us with some water. Much time passed, we asked 3 different people for water, each one seemed surprised that we weren’t being helped. I’ve heard that some places even have systems and processes in place to help staff manage restaurant patrons - alas The Lamb seems to lack such a feat of technology. Not to pile on here, let’s just say the service has room for improvement. Now the food..as someone originally from Yorkshire, I like to think I know my way around a Sunday Roast. This particular one was disappointing, the Yorkshire Pudding itself was so deflated I fear it should be on a poster for erectile dysfunction, and the roast potatoes appeared to have been made from the wrong type of potato - possibly a baking one if I was to guess. The meat was average, the chicken being the stand out which should never be the case. As in keeping with the rest of the evening, we had to wait for our bill. We asked for the service charge to be removed and the restaurant removed an extra 10% as well. The manager who did so did not ask why of course. I will say that we saw other tables receiving slow service as well. Perhaps an off night? Either way, be warned that dining at The Lamb may be a...
