Two islands of mown grass with trees around their perimeters. Cut into two by small road that buses go down. One of them houses Turnham Green Church and the War memorial.
Famous for it's battle ; The Battle Of Turnham Green 13th November 1642. At the end of the 1st campaign season of the English Civil War. Resulting in a strategic Parliamentarian (Roundheads) victory against the outnumbered troops of Charles 1st. 13,000 Royalists (Cavaliers) versus the 24,000 strong Londoners and Parliamentarians. Having lost his bid to gain London, Charles retreated to Oxford for the rest of the Civil War. The Parliamentarian forces line were located in present day Turnham Green Station to the grounds of Chiswick House (originally built 1610). The Royalist's line started at present day Chiswick Park Station and extended South to the Great West Road. A couple of hundred years ago it was a cutthroat area popular with highwaymen. Before Margaret Thatcher's era, Turnham Green and the rest of Chiswick was poverty stricken. Until the Yuppies moved in, in the late 1980's.
Has footpaths through them to Chiswick High Street and a plethora of bus stops. During the Summer it hosts a variety of fêtes. The green is split into two halves by a quiet road running between Chiswick High Road and the town hall. Pay and display parking is available in this road.
There's also some more pay and display parking near the war memorial and alongside Heathfield Terrace.
The section without the church is often used for children's sports events and is popular for sunbathing in good weather. There's not much in the way of seating in this section either.
The other half has many more benches (but could use more), and has both shaded and sunny areas to sit in. People come here to drink their coffees or have lunch. Occasionally this part is used for fun fairs and fêtes.
The only drawback is that you can't get away from the background noise of the traffic.
