November 2021. The Plough has been closed indefinitely by the landlords/ Brewery. No details available as if it will reopen. Visited today 10 / 6 / 22 after the Plough reopened a few weeks ago. This simply isn't a patch on the old plough, staff, menu all sub-para. Firstly the poor you g lady who served us her tablet wouldn't work. She took our drinks order, a while later some came to report they had lost our order. Took the new one down with pencil and paper. There was a discussion over one of the beers, turns out it has a name that I'd never heard of but was infact a very popular one. After a while we were able to order. Then we were approached to set up a mandatory tab. On production of my phone to use Android pay, we were told it had to be a physical card, and couldn't use contactless either. When the food arrived the wrong bread had been used for the sandwich, they asked you to choose when ordering. Afterwards when we asked for the bill, we recivied a paper printout that looked like we had paid...no explanation. So we got up to leave. Then realised payment hadn't been taken. Contactless and Apple pay/ Google pay was then an option. The staff looked stressed. As for the menu if you are vegan forget it, or even vegetarian there is very little. The menu overall is alsovery limited considerably so than before. My overall experience was poor and I can't bring my family with vegans and those who have other dietary requirements. Once a great pub now a shadow of its former self. We won't...
Read moreEDITED - this was a review I wrote after a visit back in October 2022 but not uploaded - still it was disappointing.
Despite having been in contact with them some time in advance regarding a couple of allergy issues, and being reassured there would be no problem, on the actual night they could not guarantee garlic free steaks.
The menu was limited and very few specials were available. Portions were extremely small and very expensive - someone though the chicken was a starter! When ordering we checked what it came with and told it came with vegetables - 2.5 tiny new potatoes a half a leaf of Cavolo nero is what we got - really poor value for money.
One of our group who did have the steak left a lot of it - meat was tough.
Issues raised (in a quiet manner) were not handled particularly well by the manager and service was not great.
We were a table of 10 and this was not a cheap meal and rest assured despite this being our nearest pub - which we used to really love and use regularly, we will not be returning.
Not one member of staff said good-bye despite is being about 10.00 and the pub was pretty empty. ...
Read moreWe visited for lunch. It was a hot day & the pub was very busy. After seating ourselves inside we waited some time to be served drinks (it's table service). Having eventually ordered a drink, we asked to place a food order. Only at this point were we told that the chef had instructed no food orders be taken for 30 minutes. Ok, so we waited some more. Eventually placed a food order - it was a lengthy wait. Fish & chips were very good; so was the beef burger although it was served lukewarm - I think it had been waiting for the chips which were piping hot. Finally went to pay where we were either charged a surcharge for our card use or a tip was automatically applied. Our waitress placed great emphasis on the opportunity to tip & gave us her name. (We prefer to tip in cash.) No-one could explain the extra charge on our bill. We looked around to find all the tables nearby empty (including those which were reserved), who all seemed to have arrived after us & left before us. So, in summary, good food, reasonable service, lower your expectations as it may...
