The Raglan E17:restaurant review.
But this one had to be done. See, I used to live spitting distance from The Raglan pub 4 years ago and, in the 5 years I lived there went in maybe twice. As I have quite the aversion to being knifed.
To say it was rougher than a badgers arse would be an insult to even the most incontinent badger. I got locked out of my house once and the hour I spent on my own in there was deeply uncomfortable. Though I did have the temerity to bring out and read a book. They did not like that. At this was at 6pm on a Wednesday.
So I was quite frankly shocked to read that it appeared in the Time Out "Best Places to Eat in Walthamstow". Eat glass, maybe.
My partner had the opposite worry - that it would be 'too fancy' (Read: pretentious food) for our needs. That being me, partner, 4 year old and my parents-in-law. Apparently Popworld's Miquita Oliver has this as a favourite. Why this caused concern I am uncertain.
However it was magnificent! Only Sunday Dinners as the mains, but you could make a meal of the sides. My FiLaw was very tempted to get chicken wings and a chips in curry sauce. And I wouldn't have blamed him.
I had the beef, P and FiL the pork and child the kids chicken. Which was basically indistinguishable from the Adult. Though half price. All delicious, all with the trimmings, including Yorkshires. Honestly, you should not be allowed to call it a Sunday Dinner without a Yorkshire.
And the quantity! Around ÂŁ20 a plate but well worth it. You know when you order the beef and get a pathetic sliver? The opposite of that.
But the star, brace yourseves, was the Veggie option - Leak and Veg Pithivier (Pie, basically) that my MiL had. Zingy, spicy, she was VERY pleased not to have gone chicken. I know right- me praising vegan food. It's woke gone mad.
Also comes Vegan. I think because of how they cook the sides.
Lovely atmosphere, lovely staff, definitely going back- perhaps on a Saturday so I can sample different mains.
Absolute recommended. But book in advance.
And I didn't...
Read moreWe visited this newly refurbished & re-opened pub near the heart of Walthamstow (still ongoing). Soon as you step foot inside, you get a feel that this is a "old school pub" in the mould of the old spit and sawdust pubs of days gone by. Not like the brewery chain ones that are slowly taking over. Its under new management with brothers, Sasha and Claude Henry with their business partners have breathed new life into this establishment and turned it around from the old pub it was.....gone are the sky sports, pool table and darts that it was previously and now a cosy little boujie family orientated pub (dog friendly too) where you can kick back and chill over a few drinks and a good bite to eat, be it with your colleagues from work after a hard day @ the office or with family and friends for drinks and a catch up. We opted for a mix of all dishes and everybody in our party just helped themselves. The spicy chicken đ wings were to die for and with just about the right amount of spice, even to nearly bring a sweat on, but not a fire on your mouth. The battered ochra or lady fingers I've never had before but was lovely with a dipping mayo. The side dishes to the main were comfort food heaven. Masalla chips and the mac n cheese with crispy onion toppings I could have doubled up on. These were accompanied by our main which was a hearty cut of a leg of venison, which was on a different level.....your taste buds will be singing like a young boys choir after a visit to this place.......the vibe to the menu is definitely influenced by Indian cuisine and let's face it who doesn't like that ?? I'd highly recommend a visit here and trust me after trying the menu, you'll be coming back for more......absolutely 10/10 and I really couldn't fault it.................

Read moreGreat to see The Raglan busyâitâs clear that a businsss has finally made it a success, and weâd heard great things about the food, so we decided to pop in and give it a try.
It was a little surprising that only a set menu was available, especially as not all of us were feeling particularly hungry. After a bit of discussion, the staff kindly agreed to let us order a couple of items separately, including their legendary chips. The food was genuinely delicious and well-preparedâwe were really enjoying ourselves.
Unfortunately, the experience was let down at the end. We were charged ÂŁ96 for two additional portions of duck, even though weâd been told they would be ÂŁ20 each. This was puzzling, especially considering that the full three-course menuâincluding duckâis priced at ÂŁ35. The extra portions appeared identical to those included in the set, so the higher charge didnât seem to add up.
When we queried it, the response from both the waitress and the manager felt unexpectedly defensive and a little confrontational. In the end, we paid the originally agreed ÂŁ40 for the extra portions and left feeling a bit disheartened.
Itâs a shame, as weâd hoped to return and recommend it to others. With a bit more focus on customer service and clarity around pricing, this situation could have been easily avoided. The food was excellent, but the handling of the issue unfortunately left a...
