The first time I went to Sun Inn I thought the name was ironic since it was a cozy, dark, low ceilings, thick walled beamed old building. The kind of warm dark place you want and expect most days in the British Isles, but definitely don’t want on a sunny summer day. I had some cask ales and crisps and was very satisfied to come back again, but really just wanted to be outside in the sun. People from all walks of life stood and sat about and mingled with good energy.
The next time I came I was in search for the Loo and walked past it emerging onto a vast patio garden full of fixed umbrellas, awnings seats and flowers. Children played ,hens and stags partied and still there was enough room outside for a few more groups! It was sunny, dogs barked and beautiful plates of food floated back and forth to tables. I think there might have been more seats in the garden than inside! I never knew it was there.
This time when I went we strolled in for a pint and some warmth after a successful trip to the farmers market. My wife and I played cards by the fireplace with a pint and the dog enjoyed some healthy biscuits. We reminded ourselves to make a booking for the Chateaubriand-for-two. Our afternoon was increased in pleasure by our attendant Ciro. Ciro had the kindness and honest energy you want from all people. We conversed about travel and weather and watched as he balanced just the right amount of conversation without neglecting any other people too.
To be honest we always intend to eat at Sun Inn but still haven’t got to it, but all the food looks very good.
Sun, rain snow or grey, Sun Inn is one of the top spots to relax and enjoy for...
Read moreI went for dinner with my parents. I booked an outdoor table. This pub is located just across Barnes lovely lake. It is quite a big pub with a nice warm and cosy atmosphere. It has also has a nice spacious outdoor dining area, with various tables. We dined outside as the weather was nice.
We ordered: scallops with a'ndja and fried calamari with a paprika dusting on top. Both starters were tasty but if you are looking to share I'd definitely recommend to order a few more of these starters as they are not a sharing plate and the portions for one person are just right. Both dishes were very well presented and pleasingly to the eye.
We then ordered for our mains: 2 fish and chips and an octopus plate with potatoes and a'ndja. The fish and chips batter was really lovely crispy and light, not soggy. The octopus dish was very tasty, the combination with a'ndja was interesting and yummy but the octopus portion was not as generous as I was hoping for.
We then shared a biscuit dessert which was very nice and well presented. It had some pistachio and other colored dusting on top if it and around the plate decorations. My first choice was the strawberry Eaton mess which I had seen on the website menu and looking forward to but sadly they did not have it :(
We also had drinks and spent per head £36.50 and the service is included in the bill. The staff was nice and friendly and the pub is a dog friendly one.
Summing it up: nice atmosphere, nice food with a good menu option and nice courteous staff. I'll definitely want to visit again and might ask them if they can save an Eaton mess for me...
Read moreSunday roasts aren't cheap, are they! Although it wasn't as expensive as The Crown in Twickenham, I still think £16.50 is a lot of outlay for a bit of (admittedly very tasty) meat - pork in my case, beef for my friends - and a handful of vegetables.
The trend is followed here: a large Yorkshire pudding that takes up half the plate, making the small amount of vegetables seem more by presenting you with what looks like a full platter.
Veg count: four quite big segments of roast potatoes (nice and crispy), some shredded cabbage, two carrot baton and a half parsnip. The gravy was served in a little gravy boat and was very good.
My pork came with no crackling, which was disappointing - but it was very tasty; moist and tender, separating easily along the striations of fat. Nicely spiced, with not too much salt.
The beef on the plates across the table was quite rare - surprising. The friends didn't mind that.
It was very crowded in the Sun Inn - we had to settle for a table which turned out to be directly below the air conditioner; it was icy outside, yet despite what should have been a warm environment we still felt quite cold - I kept my coat on. At first we couldn't figure out why until we looked upwards! We joked that we were pouring the gravy on the food to keep it warm.
It seems to be the way for pub roasts to have less than a hearty amount of vegetables on the plate - I grew up having roasts that filled the plate, and that was a shame. The meat was a good enough size though, and the Yorkshire pudding, although oversized, had interesting thin crispy...
