On arrival we parked up and headed inside. 3 members of staff behind the bar and one customer being served. After being completely ignored for over 10 minutes I gestured to a young man to get some attention. He asked our name for the booking and grabbed a key. Walked us out to what looked like a converted bin storage area to our accommodation. On trip advisor it says free secured parking. I asked about this as we were travelling with 2 motorcycles. He just said “ you just park in the car park”. I asked about the “secure parking” and he said it’s the large , open car park. Not an offer of “ let’s see if we can find you somewhere to put your bikes” . No interest in our concern at all. Took us to the room, opened the door, handed my wife the key, showed us nothing and off he went. My wife asked him to confirm that they closed the car park gates overnight to which he replied, no we don’t. After a wash and brush we headed into the bar, restaurant area to arrange to eat. It was empty and again we were totally ignored by staff while we stood by the “ wait here to be seated” sign for a further 15 minutes or so. A male was busy collecting plates, glasses etc but completely shunned us. At this point we decided enough is enough and walked out, walked into the nearby town and ate in a pub there. On returning around 21.30 we decided to have a drink as a night cap. Asking what time it was open until we were told “ 10 o’clock if nobody is here. It was clear that we were unwanted customers at this time of night , although a lady with long blond hair did make some conversation eventually. We went to our room around around 10-10.15 after ordering a drink to take with us as we felt awkward sitting there. We then moved our bikes into the corner of the car park that was out of site of the road and chained them together. We pulled a large recycling bin in front to try and disguise them. After a very restless night , reacting to every sound outside , we eventually got up early and left. Really disappointed with the service and you shouldn’t be staying secure parking because there is nothing secure about a wide open car park with unlocked gates. Will give it a miss next time we visit the area . In summary, the room was ok but be mindful it’s like an oven in warm weather , but the appalling service really...
Read moreOpted to hold our Golden Wedding celebration at the Waters Edge, largely because of its convenient location for family members attending. As we live in Devon we also opted to stay in one of the Canal Cottages for three nights either side of the main event. We could not have made a better choice. Nothing was too much trouble for Christine and her team, who went the extra mile to ensure that we and all of our guests had a thoroughly enjoyable time, even though there were a number of other events as well as casual dining taking place alongside our celebrations . The catering side of this business seems to run like a well-oiled machine, with the 3-course menu offering great variety and value for money. The pre-selected dishes were served promptly, with none of our guests being offered the wrong option, with portion sizes and the quality of each dish exceeding all expectations. Service was friendly and efficient, with the team ably led by Leanne who ensured that all of our ad hoc needs were met as the evening progressed. All of those attending had nothing but praise for every aspect of the meal, which was no mean achievement, given the age range of our guests! All in all, a memorable evening in a beautifully appointed and well-managed venue, set alogside the Grand Union Canal. As for the overnight accommodation, no complaints at all. Our room (Canal View 1), whilst compact, had everything you could want for a short stay, and was spotlessly clean and tidy throughout. As we were staying over the weekend we were able to sample the full breakfast menu, served in the main restaurant or al fresco on Saturdays and Sundays. My wife and I have stayed in some of the better country house and coastal hotels in Devon and Cornwall, but I have no hesitation in stating that breakfast at the Waters Edge was better than any we have enjoyed in recent years at those establishments. On weekdays a light breakfast consisting of croissants, cereal and yoghurt is provided in the rooms, with fresh milk and mineral water in the fridge - a nice touch which was much appreciated. To summarise, a very well-run dining and entertainment venue offering great food, good service and a great ambience. Thanks to all of those involved in helping us to mark a very...
Read more· An absolute Horror show before halloween which I have found it quite hard to write as there were just so many. All we needed was a base and a place to put our heads down. It not only failed this it was completely unsafe and uninhabitable! I kept considering the good price but actually when I add it all up it was just unsafe and ridiculous they'd rent out the room we had! To begin with we were not even given a watersedge room. Some form of utility room / staff quarters. Which if I had staff in it I'd make sure the tiles were safe and the apology notice hadn't yellowed. Not good enough. Furthermore the welcome was odd. Having to wheel my suitcase through a baby shower. Why is the main door taped off? I don't care how close to London we were the drinks were extremely overvpriced! And tasted soapy. extreenely uncomfy bed. The headboard (with broken lights) was a double. The bed did not match its width. Furthmore I am not even 6ft. My feet were off the end. Disgraceful and cramped. I haven't mentioned yet that the other room was less than 1 yard from us. Also number your rooms. Red room?! Half expected christian grey to walk out. But there were noises. Oh there were noises! I'm not even mentioning the Dj until 11pm and drunkards until gone midnight (we were warned about the dj but not recompensed or given a waters edge room) but when the drilling began at 9am on a Sunday morning when you have paid guest and continued for well over 90 minutes. It made an abhorrent experience even worse. We were welcomed back to our room after dinner to the sight of smokers / drinkers so close to our room I still cannot believe they'd put table and chairs there. The breakfast was basic and nearly made it into a savin grace of this report. Until I had to have black coffee and only 1 of us could have serial due to the...
