From the moment we walked into this quintessential English pub, we knew we were in for a treat. The warm, rustic charm of the place immediately enveloped us – wood beams, glowing hearth, and the unmistakable scent of hearty fare in the air. The ambiance was cozy yet lively, just the perfect setting for a memorable evening with friends... and our dog Mushu, of course!
Speaking of Mushu, the staff went above and beyond to make sure he felt just as welcomed as we did. Andrea, our incredible waitress, immediately greeted us with a smile and asked if we'd like a bowl of water for Mushu. She even brought him a few dog treats to keep him entertained while we enjoyed our meal. It’s rare to find a place that treats your four-legged companion with the same level of care and attention, and we were so grateful for that extra touch.
Now, the food. Oh, the food! We ordered the steak, and it arrived cooked to perfection – juicy, tender, and full of flavor. Paired with a couple of perfectly poured pints of ale, it was a match made in pub heaven. The richness of the steak was complemented by the smoothness of the beer, making each bite and sip more enjoyable than the last.
And then, the dessert. The brown with caramel ice cream was a revelation. Warm, comforting, and decadently sweet, it was the kind of dessert that makes you want to savor every spoonful and never let it end. The caramel was just the right balance of rich and sweet, with a hint of salty goodness that made it unforgettable.
But it wasn’t just the food and drink that made this evening special – it was Andrea. Her warmth, attentiveness, and infectious enthusiasm made the night feel like a celebration. By the time we were leaving, we felt like we’d made a friend, not just a memory.
If you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by this extraordinary pub. With food this good, pints this perfectly poured, and a service that feels like home – and the love they show your furry companions – you’re guaranteed an experience that will leave you smiling long after you’ve finished your last bite. Huge thanks to Andrea and the entire team for making this night one we’ll...
Read moreI would have put a 5 stars for this pub before my disappointing experience I got throughout the afternoon there. I had booked a table for 8 people, for my birthday, on a Sunday. There was delay with the food being served, though, it's Sunday, there are lots of people, we have time, the staff is friendly, I've been a waitress before, I can forgive. Though, the following occurred and the line had been crossed: – My friend received her order. It took another 15min for the rest of us to get ours. Obviously, she had finished her plate by the time we started. – The starter (bread & olives) arrived AFTER the main – We asked for the dessert menu 3 times. No one came to take our order so we went to the bar to make the order. After waiting 15 minutes, we realised that he order hadn't been placed. When the desserts finally arrived, the coffee didn't. – I asked about the deposit I made when booking the table and I got told that I hadn't been charged and so the money had never left my bank account. Two weeks later, checking the accounts, I realised that the White Hart had never reimbursed me the £80 deposit. I had to call to make this happened. Although I had a nice person over the phone, I didn't appreciate the lines 'it's been hard with covid… the industry is lacking staff…'. When you've literally stolen £80 of a customer due to lack of professionalism, the last thing they want to hear is how hard things are for yourself. Of course, not a single 'you'll get a pint on the house' was offered.
I am very bitter about this because I truly liked this pub. The staff has always been nice, the location is great and the interior is cosy. I get it that some days (especially Sunday) can be busy and difficult to manage. Though, the deposit mistake and your lack of commercial gesture tells me that you have enough customers to not...
Read moreWe visited the White Hart for a Sunday lunch and had high hopes, especially given its fantastic location right on the river. However there is no allocated parking but we managed to find a spot nearby. We had booked ahead and were lucky to get a table on the balcony - the views were absolutely lovely, and the setting really makes this place stand out. The pub itself is full of character – a beautiful old building over 300 years old, spread across several floors, and the atmosphere both inside and outside was warm and welcoming. Toilets were clean too, which is always a good sign.
The drinks menu was impressive, with a great selection of lagers and ciders, and everything we ordered was spot on. The main letdown, unfortunately, was the food. We ordered a mix of Sunday roasts – beef, chicken, and vegetarian – as well as the rabbit terrine. My friends enjoyed the terrine, but all of us were disappointed by the roasts. While the meat and vegetables were cooked well, the dishes were completely overpowered by black pepper. It felt like seasoning had gone overboard, and the Yorkshire puddings were actually burned, which was disappointing as well.
Service was a bit slow – we waited quite a while both to place our food order and then again for the food to arrive. By the time the food came, I didn’t bother sending anything back. Then we just went to the bar to pay as the waiters were quite busy.
It’s a real shame, as the pub itself is gorgeous and in such a prime spot, but sadly, the food didn’t live up to expectations on this visit. Would return for drinks and the view, but probably not...
