Discovered entirely by accident whilst trying to avoid traffic at chokers corner. A wonderfully bizarre monument to the Victorian eccentric explorer and polyglot, tucked away behind an RC church in Mortlake. The sides of the tent were a bit mossy and damp looking which is a bit sad. I hope there's a society involved in it's preservation. There's also a secret to be discovered if you look thoroughly at the tomb... The rest of the graveyard is quirky, peaceful and intimate. Definitely worth a at least a few minutes of exploring..

Bit tricky to find the entrance, but you'll get there in the end. You can see the top of the mausoleum from the alleyway so Google maps works reasonably gets you very close. View inside the mausoleum is absolutely great, partly flaking paint falling down, two ornate coffins and grave goods hanging from the ceiling but you may need to stand on the ladder and peer in for a few minutes for your eyes to acclimatise.

I stumbled upon the tomb whilst passing, you should too. An incredible tomb located in a small urban grave yard. Definitely worth the trip... oh and don't miss climbing the short ladder to the rear for a peak inside, fascinating.

This, to be fair, is just a tomb where two people have been laid to rest, but the look and design is nothing I have ever seen as a tomb anywhere before.

It is fairly striking in it's appearance, as it has an Arabic travel tent look, that encapsulates the character of the owner Sir Richard Burton, who was definitely a character in himself and someone worth reading more about in detail.

The rear of the tomb provides a ladder up to allow the visitor viewing access inside the tomb. Don't worry about seeing anything gruesome inside, as all that is visible are...
