I'm currently staying here for five nights, just had my fourth night and absolutely love the place. First of all location is great. Top of the High Street in Maldon so it's nearby the shops and historical locations such as the Plume Library and Moot Hall. Then there's the room, which is better than I expected for the money. The bed is very comfy, there's a kettle and a coffee maker and even bathrobes and slippers. Quite luxurious for rooms above a pub! Last but not least; the owners are doing everything the can to make my stay here pleasant. They are kind and helpful and they cook a very good breakfast (which I will definitely miss once I'm back home again!) All the other staff is very kind and welcoming as well. They truly give you the "home away from home" feeling. Are there no negatives at all? Well it depends who you'd ask probably. There are no downsides for me, but of course a room above a pub can be a bit noisy. I 'm not bothered by it, and the pub closes at a decent time so I've had no problems with the noise. Besides, I always carry a set of earplugs when I'm travelling. Another negative could be that the car park is paid for (as per decision of the town council, not of the owners). Now I don't drive a car so for me that is no problem. But if you do drive a car and don't mind walking a bit further then you can park a bit further down on the road leading up to the car park (Farmbride road) for free ;) I'll end this review by saying I'll definitely will be back here.

Edited to add photo. Do not visit here if have allergies, are vegan or want you drink within an hour. I ordered a vegan mezze board which came with a dip i was uncertain of as was listed elsewhere on the menue with chese, and with non vegan crackers (containing milk). I first asked the waiter who brought it over who took the dp and brought it back saying he checked with the chef and that all was vegan. As I was without with colleagues I messaged a friend to check the crackers (which were clearly branded with the word 'Jacobs' on) who confirmed they are not vegan. I checked with the same person again who claimed they were vegan. I did not eat them and on leaving spoke to the manager who went to the back and again came back and said that every cracker they get in was vegan. At this point I also checked that they were aware that vegan menat no milk, butter or dairy. She still insisted all was vegan but did not show me packaging. As I was with colleagues I did not push further. Regardless, as an initial group of 4 is took us over 45 minutes to be asked for out drink order, despite going to the bar multiple times and asking passing staff. When we had placed our orders it took over an hour and half for drinks to arrive. Orders (other then mine) were mixed up and forgotton,. most notably a steak.

Didn’t stay in this hotel, cannot review the rooms. This is a review about the food and service. On entering it is a quaint public house with what looks like a smattering of regulars. We were only ordering lunch so went for starters as lite bites. Soup and fish cakes with salad. Was expecting fish cakes with at least fish in them. What I received was a very cheap deep fried basic potato cake with no actual fish. There were 2 on the plate with a balsamic dressed salad leaves. When the waitress came to collect the plate as there was no check up to see if the food was ok, I told her that they were terrible. There was no apology, no offer of anything else or refund. So in essence I paid for a very expensive handful of salad leaves. Would I visit here again? NO!

Do not approach this hotel.. there's something with White horse hotels they for some reason seem to be jyxted.. we asked for a refund as the blonde haired young bar manager decided to stay on the Monday night and talk with his partner until 3am so they disturbed us and we didn't get a minute night asleep all night, they also let a couple of male building workers stay or customers stay not registering them to the room either paying at the bar or just letting them stay free of charge, it was heard from the bar staff down stairs how he spoke about us dirogotory for some reason and for the workers not to worry about anyone already staying which we wondered why they said that, so they also put us at risk and others if there was a fire and they didn't book in no one would of known they were there||||The manager was approached, couldn't get anywhere with them, they were not sypethic and accused us of dreaming it, which disheartened us and worried us with the worry of further fraudulent activity that could happen in that pub, we did ring every other sister pub of there's warning them for further fraudulent activity explaining what had gone on and asking them if they could help us with a refund, the pub was loud, all we received was attitude from the silly little females that worked in the sister pubs and derogatory language, the manager is from Newcastle 🙄 and comes across as if their work ethics like the Irish and may be suffering from some sort of substance abuse, if you know what we mean, it is worrying and concerning what theve done, you should be able a trust people in charge of others, this is unsettling and worrying for the future of the...

We arrived a party of thirteen to have something to eat and drink following a wedding local to to the area. We were told food could not be ordered for another hour so we all sat outside and had cokes all round. A couple of people were so hungry they got a roll from elsewhere and rejoined us outside. The waiter came and said that normally they don’t allow people to eat food bought elsewhere, we understood and explained the circumstances. He said not to worry and that the two rolls could be finished as we were drinking and going to order food as soon as they started taking orders. Next arrived the bar manager who very unpleasantly told them to stop eating. We told her what had happened and she said he would not have said that. We said we don’t want him to get it into trouble but you should check rather than imply that your customers are lying. By then we had ordered food and others were eating their meals. Her treatment of us was appalling we finished our meals and she came over again and started the argument up again. We started to leave and we said we’re leaving now to which she replied good! She then arrived with another guy to watch us off the premises! The food was great, waiters great but the experience ruined by this person. Overall one star because of the experience had this not happened...
