I'd pre-booked table to entertain guests and we got there slightly ahead of our allotted time but although there was a sign talking about precautions (and a QR code to scan) there wasn't any directions where to go, so we strolled into the bar.
The premises insists on masks (and all staff are masked up) but once seated, they can be removed - pop them back on to wander around when inside the building. We were shown our table which featured a specials board, and a drinks order was taken whilst we waited (there's a good range of beers, so we decided to spend the evening sampling most of them).
My colleagues elected for the Herefordshire Beef, Mushroom & Ale Pie (standard menu), along with Belly Pork (off the specials board) and both came sitting atop a pile of creamed mash, surrounded by gravy. The belly pork has crispy skin - some good crackling - but required removing the layer of fat between that and the meat (well, it's belly pork - you'd expect that). The pie was rich and dense in meat, there was no scrimping on the filling here.
Both dishes were accompanied by a small tureen of boiled veg - a nice mix of carrots, peas, cauliflower and broccoli - to round it off and made for a filling meal.
I opted for the swordfish steak, which say atop a pile of tomato and onion risotto. I found the fish slightly overdone as the flesh was hard, but wasn't a problem to eat - and the risotto was nicely flavoured with herb oil and sweet tomatoes, although I could have done with less risotto and some veg to the side (other than rocket on top).
Service was very engaging and although the dining area seemed quite popular, we didn't feel pressured to move, sitting there for a few more drinks.
Eventually we shifted outside to continue working our way through the list of ales to free up the table - service here was a bit hit and miss as bar staff waited on tables to take orders but had no way of communicating it back to the bar so there were long delays whilst waiters walked around collecting orders, taking these to the bar to get fulfilled and eventually bringing trays laden with several orders out... there really needs to be some quicker ordering system, and each round had to be settled there and then rather than roll up a tab as we had when indoors.
Nonetheless, was a great night out and I'd definitely return - there's quite a few meals that...
Read moreAttended for Sunday lunch to celebrate my Dad's birthday. Haven't been for some years, so was looking forward to it, as it used to be great. Called and booked a table for 5. Phone answered by a very friendly man, who managed to book us in. Arrived, beer excellent, very good choice of real ales. Went to dining room and was greeted by a friendly lady who showed us to our table and provided menus. Everything going well so far, ordered our meals, all had Sunday lunches. Waited an average time for lunches to arrive, looked nice. Vegetables came separately. We were given one dish of vegetables and asked if we wanted more. Ermmmm yes please! (there were 5 adults, there were enough vegetables for 3 people at a push). Got the impression that we were asking for something extra, not what should have been a reasonable amount for 5 people. We were not asked if we wanted any sauces or if there was anything else we needed. Three of our party shared the vegetables and we urged them to start eating. After several minutes, I asked the same male (an older male, possibly manager) if we could have some sauces, someone else in our party asked if we could also have some more vegetables (as we were still waiting) without even looking at us, he said through gritted teeth, "the vegetables are coming" and rolled his eyes. He then realised I had seen him, and scuttled off. Several more minutes passed and another serving of vegetables finally arrived. All the while our 2 meals were sat going cold. The food was OK, I wouldn't say amazing. We all had a desert, they were also OK, although definitely NOT worth £7 each. I had the treacle tart, which tasted nice, but the base of the pastry was so hard and chewy I ended up having to pick it up to be able to eat it. The other staff were friendly and attentive, but that one staff members attitude and customer service was absolutely appalling and left a VERY bad impression. Won't be returning.....because of him, he really let the side down. He desperately needs some customer service training or maybe just retire. Made Victor Meldrew look positively joyous and...
Read moreI wish The Nags head pub was my local!! The Nags Head is everything you want in a great, well, actually perfect pub. We had just come down from walking to the beacon (highly recommend doing that as well) and wanted to find somewhere for us to have a belly warming Sunday lunch for the three of us and Buster the dog. We stumbled on The Nags Head via a Google search and thank goodness for Google!! The welcome was so warm and friendly in what was an already busy pub, in fact packed pub. We found a table and collected a menu on the way. Open fires and a great atmosphere made us feel very welcome. We ordered our food at the bar and drinks at the same time. A Turkey roast, beef roast, and a veggy mushroom and cranberry roast for me. Drinks were delivered nice and quickly, Sarah said her coffee was the best in a pub for a long time. Our food took no time at all to arrive and by george it looked so good. Hot plates, great Yorkshire and the spuds, oh my. The bowl of steaming veggies topped it all off. My veggie roast was honestly so tasty, and the girls said their meat roasts were the best ever. We cleaned our plates. I have to say, I can not find anything negative to say about our experience or lunch at The Nags Head. I have worked in the hospitality industry all of my working life, and to stumble on somewhere this good is rare. I really do wish I lived closer. We will be back. I have been telly everyone how good this pub is. Well done, and I really mean...
