This is a difficult review to write because I wanted it to be more positive than I can make it. I have been curious about the Cafe for some time, so I have visited twice in the last 3 days. I haven't had any of the German specialities so can't comment on them. First I went for a cold drink (juice) on a warm afternoon and a slice of apple pie with pouring cream. The juice I think was straight from a cheap carton 'from concentrate'. It was cold and refreshing but nothing special. The slice of pie ticked the boxes but again not special. Those two items + a can of Sprite cost over £12. A price which might have been acceptable for very special food and drink but this wasn't special. A quick scan of the menu suggests that this place is on the expensive end of light food and drink. Then I went again today for a light snack and coffee. I ordered a hot sausage and bacon sandwich on granary bread. I actually got a hot sausage and egg sandwich on white bread. The staff were not run off their feet (one person inside finishing a snack and nobody else waiting). Why the order was so wrong I don't know. I didn't make a fuss. I also ordered a Cappuccino which tasted like one of those sachet instant Cappuccinos though it did have a good 'head' of froth. I sat outside which is quite nice even though it is on a dual carriageway main road, but seating is shielded a little from the traffic. I wanted the cafe to be better than it was. I wanted the food to be tastier and more imaginative than it was and it would be good if it was a little less expensive. I may go again, perhaps just to try one of their other coffees though there isn't much choice. A really good cafe could have become a regular haunt for me but there are a few other places (some independents) around here which are more...
Read moreThe German Cafe in Shirley provided a delightful experience during my recent visit. As I awaited the outcome of my son's driving test at the neighbouring test centre, I indulged in their full English breakfast, which was nothing short of exceptional. The breakfast was a hearty and satisfying meal, featuring perfectly cooked eggs, crispy bacon, succulent sausages, and a generous serving of baked beans and grilled tomatoes Each component was cooked to perfection, making it a truly comforting meal.
The ambience of the cafe was warm and inviting, with friendly staff who made me feel right at home. Their attentiveness and cheerful demeanour added to the positive atmosphere, making my wait a pleasant one. The decor was charming, with a subtle nod to German influences, creating a unique and cosy setting.
The highlight of my visit was receiving the wonderful news that my son passed his driving test on his first attempt. The German Cafe provided the perfect backdrop for this memorable moment, and I couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate. I highly recommend this cafe to anyone in the area, whether you're looking for a delicious meal or simply a welcoming...
Read moreNot sure where to start with this… the menu we have received had a very unpleasant smell. We have ordered some diet coke, and we have received a flat drink that has been poured in the back from a big bottle… not to mention how massively overpriced this drink was. Honestly if you are charging this much at least you can provide individual cans/small bottles of drink. The food was quite bad as everyting is fried in the same 2 pans over and over again. All we could taste was pure grease. The poached eggs are pre-made and not fresh to order. The girl in the front took a small plate off a table, wiped the breadcrumbs with her hand and put it back in the “clean” pile. The cook/owner uses the same tongs to pick every single ingredient that goes on everyones plate. The mushrooms, onions, tomatoes etc on everyones plates are displayed in the front the whole day in old butter tubs. When we left our clothes smelled as if we worked in the kitchen and cooked the food ourselves. Overall very poor and will never...
