Staff here were very accommodating. Despite turning up an hour early to chance our luck on a fully booked night, staff were able to accommodate us (two people) within a couple of minutes, (after warning it would be "about 15 minutes").
Service was friendly and attentive, and the starters (lamb samosa and onion bhaji) were spot on. Totally fresh and lovely flavours. What let the starters down were the accompanying sauces/dips. The mint yoghurt was just lacklustre verging on watery, and the chilli lacked spice (and a little too sweet for me but that's personal preference). Sadly both detected from the starters rather than complemented them.
Mains were both nice, but I wouldn't say any more than that. Both dishes seemed to have the right idea about what they should take like, but almost like the chef was afraid he might have got it wrong and hedged bets by leaving out half the flavour. I don't know if that's trying to cater for the local market, but my friend who always orders a mild korma as can't stand anything spicier was more than happy with my medium spiced dish. I even had to check with said friend whether the naan was indeed garlic or whether they had given us a plain one instead. He insisted there was garlic in it but I'm still not convinced!
Portion sizes were ok, and I left feeling satiated but not full. If I was hungry going in our meal of starter each, main each, shared rice, shared naan, and shared veg would likely still leave me craving more.
I really want to love this place, and it's close to 4* with potential for 5. Just feels like the food is apologising for being what it is and therefore not letting the...
Read moreMy better half and I moved to Suffolk a while ago, but always travelled to Norwich to the Indian restaurants we knew, as we had found some decent ones. We decided to try somewhere new locally though, and gave the Redfort a go. We called to book a table for the next day, and were booked in by a friendly chap called Jewels. We got to the restaurant the following day and, despite it being on the main road, we were pleased to find free parking at the rear of the restaurant. We were met with a very warm welcome and it was nice that they remembered us from the call the day before. The restaurant was clean and smart, quite small, but well laid out. Poppadoms came with 6 sauces/chutneys and all were really nice. Main courses were a King Prawn Jalfrazi and a Lamb Korma. Both with rice's and a Peshwari Naan. Food came out in good time, was piping hot and was absolutely delicious. Not oily or watery, you could taste the different spices and flavours and the prawns were decent sized. The Lamb was like it was slow cooked, not tough or chewy. Two coffees to finish a great meal. As important as the food, is the service, and this was faultless. Jewels was awesome, always seemed to be there if you needed anything, but not at all imposing. Nothing was too much trouble and it was clear he was proud to deliver service as it should be. We have found our new "local" Indian restaurant and will definitely be back. They have a good menu and plenty more dishes to try! Credit where its due...top...
Read moreWe recently ordered a collection from the Redfort Restaurant for five people, including one Vegan. They accept cash on delivery if ordering as a takeaway. They only accept cards if you pay in-store. The food was ready at the time we asked for and they have a car park at the back of the restaurant. What stood out, when placing the order on the phone, was how conscientious and knowledgeable they were in ensuring the Vegan customer was getting the correct food, including taking out two vegetarian items and swapping them out with vegan options. Once we collected our order, only a couple of dishes needed a 30 second reheat. The rest was still hot enough (like you'd get served up in a restaurant). All the food was delicious and very light, not oily or heavy. We could taste the different spices and flavours in every dish (we ordered a mix of masala, bhuna, badami, shopna, as well as rice and byriani dishes). Leftovers were a welcome lunch next day. In all, the friendliness and knowledge of the staff was excellent. The food was cooked to perfection. I only marked it 4 stars on the food quality due to a scant number of prawns in the byriani (to truly call it a King Prawn byriani) but otherwise an excellent experience! This was a wonderful treat for the family. Definitely recommend the Redfort for an overall authentic Indian...
