Disappointing Experience at Tuk Tuk Thai Restaurant in Milton Keynes In July 2024, I visited the Tuk Tuk Thai restaurant in Milton Keynes with two friends for lunch before my shift at work. Unfortunately, the experience was far from satisfactory, and I would not recommend this establishment to others. As someone who has lived in Asia for over 40 years and is familiar with Thai cuisine, I had high expectations for the food at Tuk Tuk Thai. However, the dishes did not meet the standards I've come to expect, especially from restaurants in Bangkok. The two main courses we ordered were overly sweet, falling short of the balance of flavors I'm accustomed to in authentic Thai cooking. Additionally, one of the items in the shared platter had an unpleasant sour taste, indicating the use of possibly spoiled ingredients. The service quality was also disappointing. The Thai lady who appeared to be the shop owner was unfriendly and unwilling to accommodate our request to have the entire meal served at the same time. The Hong Kong male waiter was friendly, but the owner's rude behavior overshadowed the positive interactions. What compounded the issue was the significant delay in the arrival of the mango sticky rice dessert, which didn't come until 25 minutes after we had finished the main courses. This was particularly frustrating as the restaurant was not even busy, with half of the tables empty when we arrived. It was clear that the staff had missed our order for the dessert, yet the shop owner refused to cancel it or apologize for the delay. To make matters worse, the shop owner's unprofessional conduct escalated, as she was observed shouting at the cook and waiter. Her use of "being busy" as an excuse, without any apology for the missed order, was unacceptable. As a result, I nearly missed my shift at work due to the poor time management of the restaurant. Given my extensive experience with Thai cuisine and the blatant disregard for customer service, I will not be returning to Tuk Tuk Thai restaurant, nor can I recommend it to others. Dining out should be an enjoyable experience, but this visit left me feeling discriminated against and disappointed. Consistency, timeliness, and respectful customer service are essential, especially for an establishment promoting authentic Thai food.

Rather hit and miss, although my sense was that they were busier than most evenings, given it was Valentine’s Day. They couldn’t seat us immediately, which was odd, as there were tables available. Then it took 15 minutes for one of the many waiting staff to get us some prawn crackers and take a drinks order. Those drinks came fairly promptly and were eventually accompanied by the complimentary glasses of fizz. We went for the mixed starters, which were pretty good, but then the wheels started to come off. The banquet was advertised with a soup and a sorbet, neither of which ever materialised (nor any explanation). The main courses were puzzling and a let-down. I was looking forward to the beef massaman and pork pad grapow. Neither appeared, but instead we got a sea bass dish and a green chicken curry. Basically the mains were completely different from the advertised menu. Bizarre and disappointing. Staff were charming but it all felt quite chaotic, like it was an opening night, not a well established restaurant. To cap it all, they added a 10% service charge, which I was too British to challenge. Not recommended.

A mixture of Thai and Chinese items on the menu. We decided to stick with the Thai items being this is a Thai restaurant. The waitress was very attentive and very friendly. Chicken Satay starter: chicken a little dry, but expected from breast meat. Chicken Thai Green Curry: very creamy and full of flavour 😋 Chicken was very moist. Maybe they should use this chicken as the satay chicken 🤔 Coconut Rice: nice and fluffy 👍🏼 Mixed Veg: nice and crunchy, slightly al dente, non mushy, well done 👍🏼 Pork Pad Kra Pow: was expecting it to be minced pork and not pork slices. Nice flavour, lacking spice, but prob catered more to the western palate rather than a Thai palate, which can be super spicy 😥 Definitely coming back in the future to try other dishes on their menu 👍🏼😎

I’m the forth person of said party of 1star review. I rarely leave reviews as find some issues are due to unfortunate circumstances however this is not one of those issues.

I coin this issue ‘The Dunning-Kruger Effect’ Relates to those who are unskilled are often unaware of it… which individuals with low ability or knowledge in a given domain tend to over estimate their competence or expertise in that domain… so let me take you on this journey which has lead one to the effect.

The errors (bullet pointed for ease of journey) 2 sharing platters were ordered, only 1 arrived 4x mains were ordered, 2 were inedible New alternative mains were ordered and arrived fairly quickly (too quick for the what was ordered) Second set of mains were worse due to the chicken being raw, putting the rest of the party of their meal *The manager was never seen again Lilly (owners daughter came over) suffers from ‘The Dunning-Kruger Effect’, made the situation worse and did not follow thru till the end. *Self-Importance and not listening to the customer when the whole table is satisfied with the food.

The good points from above; The waitress was apologetic and bought over Thai Crackers as a apologetic gesture The manager came over to apologise for the mains and offered alternatives (read other 1star reviews for the experience)

Now this reads like we were out to slate said restaurant, I assure you it’s not… this was a birthday celebration and we were and are in good spirits to celebrate.

This is to make aware that establishments have staff in place to ensure the running of their businesses are carried out correctly.

This fail of the owner’s daughter has caused this surge of review therefore the moral of this journey is as follows; Stop overworking your staff so the food is made to high standards, as raw chicken is not acceptable Empower your staff as they were very hard keeping your establishment running and they can carry out their duties without interference from family members who are dinning guests Those who suffer from ‘The Dunning-Kruger Effect’ acknowledge your status and learn from this by not interfering and let those with the skill set and knowledge handle the situation.

I hope others have a better experience at this establishment as the aesthetics is beautiful and the waitresses are lovely.

If the owners wish to speak to me directly I encourage...

This restaurant is an absolute hell no. I highly recommend that you avoid at all costs. I would like to say the service from the waitresses was amazing & I could not fault them. The food - this is a thai restaurant and the chef clearly has no experience in cooking any dish let alone thai cuisine. We were a party of 4 and ordered the share mixed started plate - it was awful. No taste no flavour. For our mains we ordered beef pad thai & beef and lamb massumun. The pad thai tasted of absolutely nothing & the beef was so overcooked and tasted more of rubber than food. The massumuns were ok - meat was also overcooked but masked by the curry sauce. When we complained, the waitress was more than accommodating & the manager came over to apologise. Fine. We then ordered the chicken stir fry as a replacement & guess what? It was pink and undercooked. At this point our table was frustrated and could not continue our meal. When we complained, a young lady (Lily) just turned up at our table and just offered us 30% off & then introduced herself as one of the owners. Her demeanour, behaviour, attitude and customer service skills were probably worse than a new born child. She wouldnt listen to our complaints and proceeded to thank us for not making scene. Frustration levels were now at a high and I was shocked that as a customer who is going through a really poor experience, she felt it was a good idea to approach us, not listen to what we had to say and just threw discount at us. Let me make it clear - this was not about money or a discount. This was to express how unacceptable it is to serve uncooked chicken and poor quality food. We also had to sit and listen to her tell us her family owned the restaurant and that she was having dinner with a friend - who would even care to listen to that? Once she had her say she came back and slapped the bill on the table and walked off. The original manager felt it wasnt important at any point to come over and apologise or help come to a resolution and they just left us with the waitress who apologised profusely on their behalf! She was even too scared to tell us any of their names (not a great look from an employee stance). As a regular food reviewer this is possibly the worse place i have ever been to. My advise to people who dont want to catch salmonella - do...
