Disappointing Experience – Not Authentic Thai

I had dinner at Gurkha in Ringwood after seeing it advertised as a Thai restaurant. In reality, the menu spans Nepalese, Indian, Chinese, and Thai – but unfortunately, the Thai dishes were a letdown.

We started with the chicken chilli starter, which was the highlight of the meal – soft, succulent, and full of flavour.

However, the mains were disappointing. I ordered a chicken Penang curry, which oddly came with courgette and onion – not typical of the dish – and the chicken was tough, dry, and tasted like it had been cooked separately and reheated in the sauce. Max had the pad Thai, but his noodles were hard in places and his chicken was also tough. We ended up picking around the meat.

We didn’t have time to ask for a recook and I didn’t want another round of the same. I let the staff know at the bar that the food was inedible, and although they apologised, we still paid the bill.

Sadly, this was probably the worst Thai meal I’ve had. While the staff were polite, the food didn’t live up to expectations – especially if you’re looking for authentic...

What a delightful experience ~ after many recommendations from friends that have good taste In quality food we stopped by chance last night and tried The Ghurkha in Ringwood. From the minute we walked in even though we had not booked we were treated politely and cordially. We started with three poppadoms and chutneys . The mint and yoghurt dip was superb and unlike any that we have ever tasted. My husband went for the Grandmas curry and was delighted with egg fried rice and I having little appetite in the heat had a tandoori poori bread and tempura prawns . We visited Gurkha Kitchen in Ringwood with a large group of about 30 people, spread across four tables. Despite the size of our group, the staff were incredibly friendly, polite, and managed everything without a hint of chaos.

The food arrived quickly, hot, and was served very professionally. I ordered Indian dishes, and so did many of my friends—everything was excellent! I was pleasantly surprised, as I had expected them to excel at other Asian cuisines but wasn’t sure about Indian food. I was wrong! The korma, pilau rice and peshwari naan I had were outstanding.
