Cosy, bustling cafe in the centre of Hitchin. It's often quite busy and there may not be seats-- it is clearly very popular. The menu had interesting unique dishes as well as brunch classics. The coffee was decent -- they stock Allpress coffees and have a guest coffee on, too. Service was timely and the food was really good. My partner had the avocado toast and I had poached pear French toast. I did enjoy my food but the pears were barely poached- they were still quite tough. Additionally the sauce that came with the avocado toast was a bit excessive. Otherwise it was really good food, though. Would definitely come again. Nice spot.

Small, friendly cafe serving high quality drinks and food. Approximately 8 to 10 tables outside, inside approx 15 covers. On a Saturday morning we waited 15 minutes for a table, but no shortage of customers queueing despite lots of neighbouring competition which indicates high regard. My Groundworks breakfast was delicious, high quality sausage and bacon, perfect egg (I chose poached), tasty tomatoes etc.Young staff were friendly though perhaps a little too keen to clear plates before all of us had finished. Nevertheless well worth stopping by.

It was cute but I’m not sure I would go again. Coffee was sour and unpleasant - I had a cortado and somehow my wife’s black decaf coffee was on point . The server did help us get gluten free but as she put through the order she rushed to the kitchen as she ‘forgot to put it in the ticket’ - didn’t give us the most confidence about the allergy was taken seriously, especially having a nut allergy too. Granola was delicious, hash brown bites were amazing, the sandwich was dry but that’s all gf bread… It was average for top London prices.

Highly recommended for wedding catering...

Since moving to Hitchin in 2014, The Groundworks has been a firm favourite of mine and my partners, especially their amazing Sunday brunch!

So when we got engaged in 2015, and started to plan our reception in tipi tents at Hitchin Lavender Farm, we thought why not ask if they’d do the catering on the off-chance (it wasn’t something they were advertising at the time). So we were delighted when they said yes they’d love to. Right from that first conversation Ben and Tom were really professional, knowledgable, understood our vision completely, and put together an amazing menu for us. They were really friendly and good fun, and our meetings and tastings with them were a pleasure. Their enthusiasm and passion for what they do really shows. Any questions we had they were happy to answer, and their organisation and management during the planning and day itself was brilliant.

The food on the day was amazing, we had so many compliments from guests about how great it was. We also really appreciated various dietary requirements being catered for with equally delicious food. All the Groundworks serving staff were also great – it was very hot on the day, and they worked efficiently and always with a smile on their faces despite the heat! The Groundworks played a huge part in what made the day so awesome and memorable for us. We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them for wedding catering – but if you’re not looking for catering, make sure you go in to their café in Hitchin, it’s SO...

Nice place, shame about the service and price. I wanted the veggie breakfast but can't eat halloumi or egg so wanted to substitute these for beans (which were an option to add as an extra for an extortionate £4) but was told they 'could not do this' in quite a rude manner by the older lady with short brown and blonde hair who was serving us. So you simply cannot swap something for something else on the plate? Not particularly hard to do. Had we not already ordered our drinks, I would have left. Instead, I had to order avocado on toast and my partner who also wanted the same ordered egg on toast which we were both quite disappointed with since you only get the one slice of bread coming at over £7 each for something quite mediocre. For two drinks and basically two slices of bread with a bit of topping, it came to £18 - had we been able to order the full breakfast as we wanted it would have only been an extra £2 each - something's not quite right there. Best thing about the place was the modern tills & ease of payment....

First time customer and will definitely be returning. The atmosphere and the smells draw you in immediately, and the staff are so welcoming. We were seated straight away (no mean feat, so I've heard) and a lovely waitress came over after a moment to take our drinks. The drinks came, with a complimentary bottle of water, and the best vanilla oat latte was placed in front of me and it was like the key to ascension. We made a simple order of a bacon and egg roll for my son and scrambled on sourdough toast for me. Let's just say, Chef understood the assignment and the food matches the top quality aesthetics for Groundworks, Hitchin. Everything was cooked to perfection, and presented beautifully. The staff were attentive, but not pressuring - maintaining the welcoming atmosphere, despite how busy they were and there was a smile from every member of staff I saw. Cannot recommend this little slice of...
