As a history lover and newcomer to Norwich, I was really excited to visit this historic pub. Sadly, after two visits, I feel parents should be warned about how unwelcoming and downright hostile the management is towards anyone with children.
On our first visit, my partner, our baby, and I stopped for a quiet drink on a summer evening after a walk. We sat outside and were only told after buying our drinks that babies had to be off the premises by 7:30pm. Fair enough, we thought — we quickly finished up and left. Our baby was calm the whole time and other customers on nearby tables were even giving her compliments.
A few weeks later we returned with friends (another couple with a baby). Again, both babies were well-behaved. It was 6pm, so we thought we had plenty of time before the 7:30 cut-off we’d been told before. But once again, after we bought our drinks, a staff member came out to say we’d have to leave in 20 minutes because “it doesn’t look good for other customers” if babies are around. When I pointed out we’d previously been told 7:30, he had no answer.
By 6:30, the guy began clearing glasses, saying he wasn’t rushing us — yet moments later the landlady stormed out. She stood glaring at us before snapping, “Are you done yet?” in a tone that was incredibly aggressive. When we questioned the inconsistency, she dismissed us rudely, saying children shouldn’t be at the pub at all and even threw in a bizarre, condescending comment about how “back in her day people couldn’t afford it.” Her manner was utterly vile — rude, hostile, and completely unnecessary when we hadn’t caused any disturbance. And to be clear, if it had been a rowdy, busy pub we’d never have taken our babies there in the first place.
Parents — be aware. This isn’t a welcoming place for families, even outside in the early evening on quiet, sunny days. The rules are inconsistent, only mentioned once you’ve already bought drinks, and the landlady’s behaviour is shockingly rude. A beautiful historic building, but an awful experience for anyone...

The woman who works behind the bar is beyond rude and seriously needs some customer service training.
We decided to stop off in this little pub on the way back to our car. After sitting down with our drinks my sister who has a 5 month old baby mentioned that my niece’s nappy may need changing. Being such a small old pub we agreed that it’s highly unlikely that they will have baby changing facilities but it’s worth asking anyway because we had only just sat down with our drinks.
My brother-in-law kindly asked the woman behind the bar if they had any baby changing facilities and she replied in an extremely sarcastic was “no darling, we’re a pub!”
We all looked at each other thinking exactly the same thing. RUDE! Even the customers at the bar raised their eyebrows in shock!
My sister then had to attempt to find a nearby baby changing facility after being made to feel uncomfortable to ask her if there was anywhere nearby.
We quickly finished our drinks and I decided to tell the woman that I found her attitude extremely rude and that there was no need for her to speak that way to paying customers. Furthermore to my surprise, instead of apologising she was once again very rude and told me that I need anger management classes. I might just add that I was sat at my table with a non raised voice.
After being made to feel very uncomfortable we decided to leave and go to another nearby pub where there was service with a smile and baby changing facilities!! 🙌🏻🍾 My step father mentioned the situation to the bar staff and they told him she has a reputation for being rude!!
Needless to say, we won’t be returning to Adam & Eve, even though the young man that served us was lovely. She could learn a thing or two from him! It’s no wonder it was empty inside.
Clearly she is unhappy in life and the pub would benefit from her calling it a day or at least go for some customer...
Read moreMe and my friends stopped by at the end of a pub crawl. There was 4 of us, 2 of whom purchased crisps so as not to be rude and sit without purchases, I got a beer and my friend got a tap water as he was driving. The bartender, Rob, very aggressively interrupted our conversation after about 5 minutes asking if we were "going to continue wasting his time". Shocked we enquired what he meant and he said that we were not paying customers and were not welcome. When I pointed out we had purchased things he stated that "we were taking tables from paying customers". Confusing as we had paid for things but even more confusing as there was only one other gentleman in the whole establishment, sitting at the bar. We once again pointed this out and he aggressively told us to leave. Upset I finished my drink and got up to go. As we were leaving I witnessed him telling a family that had just walked in they were not welcome as they had a child, despite it still being light outside. Disgustingly passive aggressiveness service that made out they don't want the business of locals. Up until then we had frequented this pub due to its lovely building and location but we will certainly never come back. Since we have heard similar stories about the same bartender. Maybe he needs reminding that some business is...
