Popped in for a late lunch as the don't open till 2. Been hankering for some spicy food and this place didn't disappoint. Waiter was really polite, helpful and explained what things were (this isn't your traditional anglicised curry house) We opted for the chicken 65 spicy little charred to perfection chunks of chicken, amazing! Some onion bhaji and poppadom with chutneys, also both very nice indeed. My wife went for a classic vegetable curry, creamy, a little spiced and a side of Kerala porotta which is a flat bread, I felt that £2.50 for one fairly small flat bread was a bit much, but it was tasty. I went for a Chefs Special Kizhi porotta Mix which had 3 breads stacked with a layer of spiced chicken, a layer of beef curry and topped with an egg, wrapped and baked in a banana leaf, essentially it was like a southern Indian lasagne. The chicken and beef Curries were dry curries, so not much sauce, which I personally love, meat was moist and very tender, a surprisingly large amount of each meat, it didn't look big when it was served, but I barely finished it! We also split a side of coconut rice which was sweet and fragrant, a real nice, light side to the meal. All washed down with a mango lasse.
Service wise, I couldn't fault the place! The waiter was a real nice guy, chatty, explaining the foods, real passionate about it, even stopped me ordering extra sides as he said I have quite a lot of food already, and boy, he wasn't wrong to do so!
Some annoyances though, bottles of water already on the table, we didn't expect to have them for free, and we were only charged £1 for each of them, given some places, that's good, but the offer of a glass or to swap them for a cold one would have been nice. We were the only people in there so I can't really comment on the atmosphere of the place, as it's hard to make much of one when there is just 2 of you. We sat in a booth and the tables were a little too low for the height of the seats, a minor thing, I'm sure, but needed mentioned. Also the dreaded service charge is stuck on the bill! We would have gladly tipped, the service was the best we have had for a while, but the need to stick a service charge on a table of 2 is a practice that really needs to stop happening. £64 for 2 lunches, sounded like a lot, but neither of us were hungry for the rest of the day! Gladly return and try...
Read moreFinding this Restaurant was a very lucky accident. My partner booked the wrong restaurant for Valentines. My parter is seriously coeliac and they assured her that they would take every precaution, to the xent that on 13.02. the manager called her afain to ensure everythibg was done correctly. And even more important was that the headchef called her on the same day to absolutely everything was in order regardin Coeliac desies. Arriving there it is a smallish, about 30 cocers restaurant with a very comfirtable ambient. And the food, we have been to many indian restaurants, has no comparison. This one specializes in Kerla food and the flavours and textures are to die for. Subtle and mesmerizing, without burning your palet out. Rather enhancing the experience with its subtlness to fully appreciate everything. I could keep waxing on but this establishment has blown me. And I am not a food critic, just someone that has traveled a lot. If you can, give ut a try, not only for the quality of food, but also that coeliac people can eat there without worry. Tjis is truely a culinary gem at the heart of Norwich. You have to taste it for yourself. Abd last, but not least, half of the customers were from the induan community and that really shows how good the food is. Follow the people who eat the foid and tgey will show you where the best restaurants are. Just try it. You will...
Read moreKeram Restaurant is one of the most decent South Indian restaurants in Norwich, and it’s refreshing to see good people taking the risk to start such a venture. As a regular customer for the past four months, I’ve had a range of experiences, and while I may not love every dish, most of them are quite good. The dedication of the owners to source authentic ingredients and serve genuine South Indian flavors is commendable. There’s always room for improvement, but Keram is undoubtedly a great Indian restaurant.
It saddens me to see negative reviews aimed at defaming the restaurant for personal reasons. As a South Indian, I feel ashamed of those who go out of their way to leave bad reviews. It’s hard to find a decent Indian restaurant in Norwich, and it’s hurtful to see such efforts being undermined. Starting and maintaining a restaurant is a risky and demanding endeavor, and I am grateful to Keram for their commitment.
Some of my recommended dishes include Chatti Choru Non-Veg (a must-try for non-veg lovers), Dosa, and Paal Porotta Beef. The chutneys, especially the coconut chutney served with Uzhanu Vada and sambar, are incredibly authentic and delicious. It’s disheartening to see people trying to hurt a business that aims to bring good food to us.
Thank you, Keram, for your efforts and for bringing a slice of South...
