I've been waiting to go to Dhaba at Fifteen since I saw the report in the EDP about it opening, and finally got a chance to go! What a fab place, and a great breath of fresh air for South Asian food in Norwich. My friend and I were warmly welcomed by the staff (who, I think, are the owners). nice modern surroundings. I wanted to try this place as I had read that the food here is much more authentic than most South Asian offerings. Great menu, with different, tasty-sounding offerings then the norm. They do do more standard curries though if you have someone in your group who likes the Brit-version of curries.
I skipped the starters, and was split between the Persian beef curry and Chettinad beef curry. I went for the latter, and boy, was I pleased I did. My mate went with the Dheli butter chicken. Before those dishes landed though, the drink arrived. As this is a dry restaurant (in terms of alcohol - I'm not sure if the lads allow bring-your-own - I never thought to ask), there are some mocktails available along with the standard non-alcoholic offerings. I went for the mock mojito which was great! Real freshly-squeezed limes and fresh mint, tasty and refreshing.
It's a bit of a cliche that we eat with our eyes first - but true, I believe - and was pleased that our food then arrived in really smart, modern dishes and bowls. None of this food on a slate / wooden board nonsense: no crockery your gran might keep in the back of her cupboard. Smart, modern looking and hot bowls with the dishes served up in a very attractive manner, with a garnish of fresh green herbs, almonds and other little flourishes.
My Chettinad curry was lovely, great balanced spices, full of flavour (and not that kinda-bland-standard curry taste that you get in so many places). There were good chunks of very tender, high-quality beef in this delicious sauce. sundries were tasty too - I had some pilau rice (I know, how standard) as well as Jeera Aloo: again, lovely fresh, balanced flavours). My mate also wolfed down his butterfly chicken with a naan bread and boiled rice. He said it was delicious too, but a tad on the warm side for him - he's not a fan of heat. But he said great flavours too. We finished off with a quick chat with one of the front of house / owners.
So, the front of house lads / owners are warm and welcoming, with their heads screwed on and know what they want to achieve with this place. I reckon they're already hitting it, especially with their excellent chef and team in the kitchen. Great, high-quality, fresh and atttractive food, filling our bellies (even without my usual starter and naan bread!). The price is spot-on: not cut-price desperation, nor over-priced.
Keep up the good work lads: I'll make a point of coming in again to try something else in a few...
Read moreFriends suggested that we try Dhaba at Fifteen so we went tonight (13/10/23). We were not disappointed! Having walked to the restaurant (not easy to find somewhere to park close in this part of Norwich) in the pouring rain, we were greeted by the front of house who took care of our very wet coats and umbrellas!! We were shown to our reserved table (Recommended). We were given time to settle before we gave our drinks order. Be aware that NO alcohol is served at this establishment! We placed our orders. I was impressed that the waiter asked if any of us had any particular allergies. Have NEVER been asked that before! Well done!! The food was outstanding!! Beautifully presented to the table. The taste was even better. I went for one of the new items on the menu, Mughlai lamb karahi with pilau rice, onion bhaji (shared) and peshwari naan bread (shared). The lamb was tender, with a sauce that had heat but was not overpowering. Shreds of 'al dente' ginger were a good compliment to the sauce. A good sized portion left me feeling full but not overly so. The price reflected the quality of the dish which I thought was very reasonable. The table staff were attentive and courteous at all times. I would highly recommend a visit to...
Read moreWe went here for my birthday meal specifically because the menu clearly states which dishes are vegan, gluten free and contain mustard. We spoke to the waiter about how we are both vegan and that my partner is intolerant to mustard. He stated that we should check the menu as each dish states clearly in bold when it contained mustard, then carefully went through our selections with him as we ordered to double-check.
Sadly the chana masala we ordered ended up having mustard seeds in it that we couldn't initially see. It's dangerous because anyone who is allergic to mustard could be in serious trouble at this point. On the plus side, they were apologetic and comp'd the meal but we had to leave sharpish for some medical relief.
The food itself that we tried was delicious but sadly we wouldn't go back as the whole experience was contradictory and dangerous with mixing up an allergen ingredient. The restaurant should check their entire menu and kitchen and make sure they are up-to-date with each other. The menu on their website stated that the masala fries could now be made vegan but the photocopied version in the restaurant...
