This was my third time here and I was pleased to see some improvement - there's a smaller option for the soup and the menu has somewhat expanded. They use local produce and update some of their dishes monthly. Follow their IG for updates!
We tried a new soup, Cream of Potato & Tarragon, which was very creamy, a bit too heavy for our liking and you couldn't really taste the potato (no texture either); we couldn't finish it between us. The brioche roll compliments well with the soups and there are 3 options to choose from. Even though the soups are not quite to our liking, I would highly recommend the mushroom & scrambled egg sourdough tartine and grilled squash & charred corn salad - very nice/flavoursome and all the food were well presented. The truffle mayo on the tartine is always fragrant, and the salad was light and sweet.
It's only a small place so there's about 3-4 tables (I think), quiet and relaxing. The interior decor is simple, yet tranquil. I like how the thoughtful owners have a charging port for customers to use, but if wifi was provided then even better! Great for book worms though. Service is friendly and welcoming, very attentive.
We bought cakes to takeaway as I wanted to try their cheesecake but we were too full at the time. Both nicely presented, although my photo doesn't quite justify it as it had been in the car for a few hours. Orange blossom oolong cheesecake - The orange blossom tasted like orange marmalade and I couldn't really taste the oolong; a little disappointing. I would recommend the mille crepe cakes more, even though I do find the crepe layers a little thick for my liking. I've tried the matcha flavour one before too, both flavours are so so.
Overall, I would still recommend this little cafe, definitely worth a try! Very genuine owners and you can see a lot of effort...
Read moreHad seen all the good reviews so decided to visit. Bright and airy room with a few tables. We were immediately approached by a friendly young woman who showed us to the table and explained how to order (at the counter and pay before eating).
Not licenced, so we ordered yuzu, lemon and honey sodas from a list of interesting sounding drinks. It came promptly and was refreshing, tangy and not too sweet.
We shared a charred corn and squash salad with miso dressing to start. Simple, but SO tasty and well with the £3 it cost.
I had a 'light' pea and coconut soup (light meaning 2/3 of the full size), with a brioche roll with honey butter for £5.50 and my partner had an avocado and poached eggs sourdough tartine at £7.50. Everything looked absolutely beautiful, so well presented. The avocado was cut to look like a flower and my soup was strewn with edible flowers.
We were both blown away by the taste of the dishes. Having just returned from San Sebastian in Spain, one of the culinary hotspots of Europe, with more Michelin stars per head than anywhere else, Soupear provides food of similar quality. This place deserves to prosper. My only concern is that when it becomes more well known, it may be difficult to get a table as it is small.
Will be returning soon to try out more things on the menu including the puddings. The soups also are changed...
Read moreNovember 2023 Update: I have found the mille-crepe cakes absolutely improved. The consistency and the texture was improved and I am glad to also update the info with the lates photos. September 2023: I have only tried their matcha mille-crepes cake so far. I was quite excited about finding a matcha mille-crepes cake in Norwich but this one I was served was either on the shelf for a bit long or not done properly as the crepes were too thick and chewy yet the creme between the layers were too thin and too dry. There were also cracks on the side which often means for this particular type of cake might not be fresh enough. I am uploading a picture of how dry it looked after one fork. The texture was also dry but the flavour was proper. The crepes' thickness might have also caused this. The service however was adorably sweet and friendly. - response to the response note below: we did consume it in less than 10 minutes after purchasing so I highly doubt take away was the issue. [Based on your swift response, I trust you will find and address the underlying issue soon. I suspect the crepe layers need to...
