There's nothing wrong with the place & it's all absolutely 'fine'. My low rating is based on my own personal preferences & standards and also based on the last time I visited over twelve years ago. It's very different. I get that. I get how difficult the hospitality trade is & I'm grateful for the food. Its with my opinion that with all the COVID plastic dirty barriers still up all around the place, (which I get) & the yellow & black tape everywhere, the tired old-fashioned decor & the somewhat rushed service (which included stripping the table down back to the plastic cover before we'd finished our drinks) it was just a bit disappointing. There's no where to sit & have a drink really whilst you wait for your table, the bar doesn't have anything on draft & there was a very funny taste with the bottled Asahi, but it was all just ok.
The food comes out I assume cooked fresh - that's great but it also means it comes out in the order you get it, there's no acknowledgement of a starter or main. You just get it when you get it, & that includes any sides.
The duck was a bit dry, the Lamb was a bit fatty & greasy, & the Nasi Goreng was not a Nasi Goreng that I know, but I'm hardly an expert. The prices for food was ok, but a small 330ml bottled beer, £5, and a J20 where they fill a small 16oz highball glass then take the rest away, well I just dont know, £100 in total for two.
The place is very noisy & the single room set up means there's no ambience as such, its just like sitting in a very busy room with everyone talking. No music, no lighting, tables & chairs stacked on top of one another, like they are having a clear out.
I do like the fact they clearly specify what the gluten free & vegetarian options are, but myself & partner, along with what we noticed most people struggled with, are the menus are old fashioned in leather bound books with plastic covers so the bright artificial light reflects & you can't see the actual menu.
I'm sorry it just was ok. I'm more than grateful for the folk who work there & the hard work that goes into running a place like this,...
Read moreVery over priced and rushed Went for evening meal and were seated as soon as we entered. 1 of our party went to the loo on the way to the table which seemed to agitate staff who seemed annoyed they had not taken a menu at this point. We were asked for drinks and gave the order as we sat. We were then asked 4 times in the space of approximately 10 mins if we were ready to order (we hadn't even received a drink at this point and were still looking at the extensive menu). Food arrived promptly and was OK (nothing spectacular - can safely say I've had better quality from local takeaways). Before we had finished our 1st course, several staff were watching our table and were extremely quick to remove plates, etc, before issuing the next course (the general theme of the evening). As we were finishing our last course we were asked twice if we were done, when we did say we had finished, 3 staff decended on our table and took plates and cutlery, checked our drinks (physically picked them up to look what we had left) and whipped the table cloth away, before being asked twice more if we wanted desert. To top it all off, we were told that if we wanted to keep the disposable plastic chopsticks that came with our meal, these would be at an additional cost. Not the service or quality I'd expect for £50+ per person for 2 courses and would not...
Read moreI dined here for the first time on Saturday, 12th of November in a party of 10. 8 of us had the S3 set meal and 2 had the V1 set meal. Whilst the 2 vegetarians seemed to be overfed and struggled to finish theirs, the quantities of non-veggie food seemed quite sparse in comparison. The non-veggies sat with empty plates for ages expecting more food to come. The consensus was that most of us felt we hadn't yet eaten £29 worth of food. When we finally got staff's attention, they said no more food was arriving. At this point discussion around the table was generally about whether or not we'd had "value for money" and someone mentioned that we were supposed to have a glass of wine included, but that had not been offered. Although most had had beers or soft drinks, everyone felt compelled to "have the wine" just to realise some value, so 10 wines were ordered. It seemed to then revert to the "fine print" as the server made the point that the vegetarian set meal did not include wine. Fair enough and technically true, but it begs the question why, as the meals were all priced at £29 pp, and surely vegetable are cheaper than meat? On the upside, there was ample parking and the food was quite tasty; however, the portion sizes of the S3 and the resulting less than amiable attitude to a quite large value party, turned the overall experience...
