This place has been around for at least 35 years that I know of and probably much longer than that which has got to tell you something. I think it would be fair to say that this place hasn't changed much in all that time. There is a fish tank, if you can find it, there's a nod to flock wall paper which you would have to be of a certain age to know what I'm talking about, together with crockery that has been a staple for more restaurants than you could imagine. Yes, it is a little rough around the edges, especially the trip to the upstairs loo which was memorable for all the wrong reasons however it is clean and boasts a 5* Hygiene Certificate which few others can. Despite the above I really like this place, it took me back to the 80s, except the staff here were exceptionally friendly and obliging. There's a comprehensive menu that covers all the bases including a children's menu, if it's not on there they could probably do it anyway. The food on our early Friday night visit was excellent. Crispy warm poppadoms with generous dips, and we were off for a good start. The sheekh kebab was superb, nicely spiced fine ground mince that had not been overly bound together like a Peperami. There was nothing wrong with the onion bhaji either. There were three of us and I would go so far as to say that the main dishes we had were collectively the most flavoursome we have experienced. In most restaurants you will have to forgive very strong similarities between some dishes in our case, a Jalfrezi, Balti and a Garlic Chilli Chicken. Not here though, as each dish had its own distinct flavour profile and the chicken in each was very tender. The sides were very good including an impressively puffy garlic naan. The restaurant was quiet on the night but I prefer that to one where you can't hear yourself think. I noticed it was very busy on the take aways. Overall an excellent meal at a very competitive price plus the option of being able to take your own alcohol. Parking was a little bit of a problem but it was well worth the effort. A second visit a week later confirmed that it's consistent if not better, and even friendlier plus there were a...

Read moreWe have been visiting this curry house for thirty years. We no longer live in Birmingham and have tried very hard to find a curry house as good as Standard Tandoori in our area, and other places we regularly visit. But this place is the real deal. Delicious meals, excellent and friendly service, surprisingly good value, and the best mint sauce I have ever tasted (order lots of poppadoms to make the most of it!). Small, local independent restaurants such as this are a dying breed. But they are such a welcome alternative to the usual corporates. Standard Tandoori should be at the top of your list when eating Indian food in Birmingham. I wish I lived closer! Please visit and enjoy. You will not he...
