We wanted to try somewhere different for my best friend's birthday: he has recently relocated to Scotland from America and after research, he choose Ganges Restaurant, which I had never been to either. We had reserved a table in advance and were immediately shown to a cosy corner table by the window. The dining room is tastefully decorated and has a cosy and intimate vibe. Our drink order was promptly taken and as the designated driver I enjoyed a mocktail, which was very tasty, the birthday boy enjoyed a Cobra beer (good to see it was on draught and not just served in a bottle) and his partner ordered the mango lassi: it was absolutely delicious and clearly freshly prepared by the kitchen - I would definitely order this on a return visit. We ordered a portion of mushroom pakora, which were served piping hot and with three dipping sauces. For our mains we each selected a different option that we hadn't tried before and opted for keep rice and cheese and garlic naan to share with our dishes. Each curry was delicious, as was the rice which was perfectly seasoned. However, the outstanding highlight was the naan bread, which we all agreed was worth the journey alone. Service was attentive, but unobtrusive and I found that the food was very reasonably priced for its outstanding quality. Definitely the best Indian restaurant that I have visited in this region of Scotland and I would not hesitate to return for a...
Read moreWe ate here on Friday 28 March . We ordered chicken and vegetable pakora which promptly arrived in a nice dish with 3 individual spaces for sauces. The sauces themselves seemed to imitate the flag of India, red white and green. The pakora was ok, not the best I’ve eaten but the sauces were a bit of a letdown, each being a little milder than the one before. I think they were mint, raita and unknown, probably a chillie concoction but as I say very mild. When I go to an Indian restaurant I expect a bit of bite to the meals, so far none. To compensate I ordered the spicy tikka masala instead of just tikka masala for my main course. I would have ordered the Madras but previous experiences have made me wary of having too much of a good thing. Anyway, the food arrived including my wife’s chicken Bhuna. Don’t get me wrong, the food was well prepared and tasted delicious but once again I was underwhelmed with the amount of spicing. My first thought was that this was prepared for European palates. In my time I’ve eaten some Indian food that almost made you recoil from the heat but were addictive in that you had to go back for more. No such issues here. Mind you I’ve eaten Indian food in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and America since the 1970s and the best I’ve ever had was surprisingly in Majorca. Who’d have...
Read moreI recently booked in here for the teatime special with my girlfriend. I expected the usual fare but was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I have eaten in many indian restaurants over many years and I have found none better than here I currently live in St Andrews and have tried Miaisha (good), Jahangir (expensive) and Tulsi (very good) . The welcome was great with the staff even asking if I wanted a towel to dry off as it was raining outside. The waitor was very welcoming and informative without getting in thew way and gave us all of our options. The food was absolutely superb with good quality as well as quantity and also an incredible deal. Thank you to Karen who checked on us regularly and helped us with anything that we wanted. Without a doubt I will be going back and can only fully recommend this restaurant. Totally 5 stars for pricing, food, service and staff. Well done all. See you...
