I like the Glad Cafe. Been in a couple of times over the years for events, but this is the first time for something to eat. Served by a nice fella and has a decent vibe but my one star is about the food and the lack of overt communication about the cafes shtick. Veganism. It’s not the brightest lit place but nowhere on the entrance or any notice boards etc did I see any declaration that this is a vegan cafe. If this is your thing, great! But at least be loud and proud about it. That way you’ll have no confusion and a pissed off omnivore who felt just a wee bit conned. On the way out I looked for signs in case I’d got it badly wrong myself, but the only thing I could see is the menu pinned up behind a glass case at the entrance. On it there is a section for salads next to which a small pale brown circle with feint pink writing declares 100% vegan. Even at this stage it looks like a reference to the salads. Nowhere on the menu is (v) sign against the food or a bold declaration that it’s a vegan menu and this leaves you feeling you’ve been conned.
Maybe the Glad Cafe is well known amongst the bright young things of Shawlands as vegan but this won’t be the case for a first time visitor to the food side of things.
Finally…I really did not enjoy my ‘burger’ it felt slimy and lacked taste which is why I assume it’s slathered in sauce....
Read moreGreat venue with rustic features. The service was a bit chaotic! 2 out of 3 starters arrived, they’d run out of starter 3 so we swapped it but that starter arrived after our mains so it was a waste as we didn’t eat most of it. Two burgers came with one chips that were warm, a while later burger 3 arrived, then later still two more chips arrived.. the seitan burger with haggis & cheese was amazing but it was served on a very small plate with no room for moving it around… if we went back I’d make sure the order of food arriving! Also the toilet situation is very odd! There’s clearly been a female toilet with three stalls & sinks, male toilet with stalls & urinals but they’ve taken the signs off the doors & anyone can use any toilet, so it excludes any females that want a single sex female only toilet. I felt very uncomfortable using the toilet & wouldn’t again. They do have a disabled toilet that you can use with lockable doors which I’d...
Read moreI was really excited to try here, we brought our dog with us today and he excitedly barked once or twice, he’s still young so we are trying to train him. Run up to bar to ask if they are dog friendly, waitress says “yes but im not sure if THAT dog is friendly” I was a bit affronted at first, we sit down and our dog settles down and is totally quiet from there on out. I actually found myself so upset at the comment I decided to leave. We felt quite judged and it felt really awkward. I’ve worked in hospitality in dog friendly places, if a dog is in you expect them to maybe bark, thats how they communicate after all, and once we were sat down we weren’t disturbing anyone and he was totally quiet. I’m hoping the waitress was joking, but even then it came off as really passive aggressive . I never usually leave bad reviews, but maybe some consideration into how staff talk to customers as you don’t know what people are...
