This a two part review from my time in Oban. After hearing so much about the battle of the fish and chip shops, I decided to spend a couple of days there so I could decide for myself who truly made Oban's best fish and chips. This part of the review is for The Oban Fish and Chip Shop - if you visit the google review page of Nories you will be able to read my review of their offering. In case you weren't aware, Nories along the road has Gordon Ramsays seal of approval as Oban's best fish and chips, so I wasn't sure what to expect from The Oban Fish and Chip Shop. The picture attached is the fish I received. I cut off a piece of the fish and the crunchy crispiness was just perfect. The fish was night and day compared to Nories. In fact I'd go as far as saying it was some of the nicest batter on a fish I've ever had. It tasted delicious, was super crispy and the fish itself was amazing, not a single bone either I might add (can't say the same for Nories). Have another look at the attached picture in my review and just look at that pot of tartare sauce. A day earlier when I got to Nories, I was excited to try their homemade tartare sauce, however when I asked for some to go with my fish, I was charged 50p for a heinz twist pot. In contrast - look at the pot of the homemade sauce I received from The Oban Fish and Chip Shop, which was just delicious, very fresh and creamy, the gherkin pieces still crunchy which gave it a nice tang. I'm giving Oban fish and chips a 5 star rating. There's not much that could be improved upon and you'd struggle to find much better in any UK home town. I will however return to update this review to confirm The Oban Fish and Chips shop is worthy of the 5 star review once I visit again in the future to prove it wasn't a fluke!

Explored oban today, visiting various beautiful sights around the local area, as well as checking out restaurant menus and sitting areas and their kitchens when possible. I checked out multiple chippies, and upon entering this establishment my party of 4 all agreed this place was perfect. The cook was preparing fresh haddock and cod when we entered, inspecting them and preparing them to be battered for incoming orders. It all seemed very sanitary and other customers food all looked very appetising. The cook was quick to check if we're looking to get takeaway, or to sit in and eat. We of course informed him we'd be sitting in, and he informed us that we'd have to wait at least 10 minutes as the seating was full, and there was 4 of us, but we happily waited after seeing other people's food, and the way everything was being prepared. We waited roughly 10 minutes, a couple did enter and stand infront of us seemingly hoping to be seated first, but we weren't forgotten and got sat down first. The staff are lovely and friendly, as well as very helpful and informative, as I was unsure what the soft drink Firefly was, and also wanted to know the difference between the Haddock sizes are. A large Haddock is actually one and a half Haddock which seemed to big, so we got a single Haddock supper each. The Haddock arrived with a perfectly light and crispy batter and the Haddock itself was fresh and meaty - absolutely perfect. It is served with a slice lemon. The chips came perfect as well - crisp coats with a soft potato interior that had a great crunch. The mushy peas had seemingly been seasoned and tasted really good.

There is a saying “don't go to the praised tree with the sack”. Sadly this experience was far from what I expected. I was so keen to visit the famous chip shop in Oban, but they disappointed me big time. The fish felt like it was fresh, but the batter soaked in oil and the chips the same. I didn’t like the taste of the tartare sauce either. About half an hour after leaving the place, I started to feel sick and almost vomited. My partner did feel sick for a couple of hours after we got home. The price would have been okay, for a good quality product, which wasn’t the case. Though I wasn’t told, nor have seen anything about the price increase comparing to the one on the displayed menu. They’ve charged us extra about £4 for each portion for sitting in. Also I didn’t see any smiles from the staff from the moment I entered the door. I guess that the picture was very clear for us, we’ll never going back. I hope this goes to someone that can improve their quality of food and service.

Thursday, the 24th of June, 2021 was my last night in Oban with my parents for a week's holiday. We had trouble being able to book some restaurants in the town, so after doing the tour of Oban Distillery, we decided to take the advice of our tour guide, Cam, who recommended going to The Oban Fish & Chip Shop and we are very pleased that we took his advice! I had the Cod and Chips and my parents had Haddock and Chips. I never get the chance to eat Cod back home, so that's why I decided to take advantage of it being available to me. This Fish and Chip shop has writing on the front window saying "The best Fish and Chips I've ever had" - a quote by Rick Stein, one of my favourite television Chefs and I have to say, I thoroughly agree with Mr. Stein! I would highly recommend The Oban Fish & Chip Shop to anyone holidaying in and around Oban, or even to people who live nearby and want to have fish and chips for their evening meal! Also, the staff are very kind and welcoming. They were all working hard and keeping the tables extremely clean and turning the tables over very quickly and...
