Over the years, I have stayed at Peebles Hydro and its sister hotel The Park Peebles on many occasions. (also at Crieff Hydro). The staff tend to stay so it's actually a joy to receive recognition and a warm welcome each time. All the bedrooms are up one floor accessed by a lift. The next floor up is accessed only by stairs. On this occasion I stayed in a basic room which is compact, has en suite with shower over the bath, hairdryer, fan, iron, ironing board, kettle and sachets of coffee, tea, milk and shortbread biscuits. I took my wee fridge which worked well. The double bed is comfortable and there is one armchair, with a table, though not much space to move around. (next time I will revert to a feature room which has more space, as well as fridge and coffee machine). It is dog friendly and there are many lovely walks. There is also a designated dog area which is handy for first and last walks of the day. Peebles Hydro is also within walking distance where you can visit the alpacas and see Peebles Hendro (hens) and Peebles Hivedro (bees) :) Peebles High street is a thriving shopping area, on the level so good for the elderly as well as families with buggies. Forsyths Bakers and butchers are second to none, as is Jim and Jacks Fish and Chip shop down a side street more or less opposite the Park Hotel. Best fish and chips ever! My aim is getting to St Andrews Leckie Church for 11am on Sunday morning and the most amazing folk there make me want to move to Peebles! Tesco and Sainsburys are the main supermarkets. The Thursday market has less traders nowadays but you can still find the fishman and petfood/birdfood with excellent service and variety. It's actually a challenge to get booked into The Park Hotel, which shows how popular it is. Full breakfast is excellent and the hotel is also popular with locals popping in for a chat over coffee and cakes. For myself, in addition to the menu, I would like to see some simple options added such as baked potato, salad, omelette. You meet some lovely guests whenever you visit. I was also impressed by the young waitresses who work a long shift but always have a cheerful smile and a willingness to help. I...
Read moreFrom the outside this looks like a very good hotel. It should be - it is in a great location! Unfortunately the place is a big let-down. My wife and I joined friends who were residents, at breakfast. As a result, I can only mainly comment on the restaurant. Very drab, poor service and certainly not value for money. The tables were sticky - apparently a mistake with the 'wrong' varnish. One would have thought that this would have been sorted out since according to staff this situation had existed for some time. My wife and I asked if we could just have the continental breakfast on its own but were advised that we would need to pay for the full breakfast. So we paid over £15 each to have an orange juice, toast and poached eggs with coffee!!!!|The restaurant is not hotel standard and requires updating. the continental food presentation was what you would expect in a 3rd rate hotel/B&B with few, non-enticing cold meats and unripe fruit. requests had to be made to staff for (clearly cheap) orange juice refilling, bread for toast and butter. They are clearly understaffed as well as severs also attend to the reception. It is a pity that our friends are not people for complaining and so are highly unlikely to write a review. However, they told us that they had problems with the shower and were not advised that the lift only went to the 1st floor leaving them to struggle with luggage to the second floor.|I definitely would not recommend this hotel to anyone and think that those who use this hotel must be people passing through and staying for one night. I wouldn't think there would me many who would re-visit unless there were no other options.||It is a real pity as this establishment is in a lovely town with many tourists passing through. Having visited many excellent hotels I hate to think what some of the tourists must think of our country when provided with such an offering. I really do feel that with the correct management and vision this hotel could easily be improved dramatically.||Come on "The Park" - please make an effort as you have a great opportunity to provide a...
Read moreWe spent 4 lovely nights at this hotel with a wonderful group of staff in every area including the big sister Hydro hotel up the hill nearby. We ate in the bar one evening having delicious soup starters and burgers with drinks for a reasonable £50+. The breakfast was buffet style with served hot full Scottish or vegetarian equivalent. Both were great quality and cooked to perfection.
There is an inhouse bakery, which we had to sample, and the cakes were great. We saw amazing looking sausage rolls but didn't get round to trying them. Next time!
We used the pool, spa, gym and outdoor tennis facilities for free at the Peebles Hydro, paying £10 pp extra for our kids to join us for a Mother's Day celebration.
We had one significant issue during our stay which we have gone into more detail at the end and the reason we have not given the hotel a 5-star review. Our allocated room was above the main kitchen and on speaking to the hotel they dealt with it appropriately with some compensation.
Peebles is a lovely wee town with great restaurants (and one not - check the reviews first) shops, cafes and plenty of walks all the River Tweed our through the Neidpath Tunnel & Viaduct.
We highly recommend both the town and The Park Hotel for a relaxing weekend or holiday.
Beware of Rooms 75 & 76... we paid a nightly fee for a 'feature' upgrade of our room, on entering it we became aware of a loud 'generator' noise. While sorting the safe in the room a member of staff informed us that it would go off later in the day. It was the extraction for the cookers in the hotel kitchen below us. The following morning we were awoken around 7:30am by the same noise, staff talking and the thud of a 'cold store door'. We spoke to the Operation Manager, who was new to the position, and she was obviously aware of the issue and had been trying to do something about it. She compensated us as we didn't want the hassle of...
