When friends realised we were heading to Southport for a mini break … instantly said you’ve got to book and go to The Fisherman’s Rest (and gave directions). When we got to Southport I remembered the Fisherman’s part! The the warden on site mentioned a lovely local pub …. The Fisherman’s Rest! Yes I’d got the name! We had driven to Morecombe and back and decided to walk over to The Fisherman’s Rest and see what it was all about. The pub was immaculate with lots of reserved tables. We found a table to sit at and the hubby went and found me a nice ale. The menu looked superb with lots of choice. Even though we hadn’t booked a table we were able to order food and it was incredible, the people serving and behind the bar were great and liked a bit of banter. But then to top it off came the Sticky Toffee Pudding with custard… this was truly amazing! Would totally recommend and a big thank you to all the staff for a fantastic meal - especially the pudding. I am hoping to return before we go home to try the Chocolate Fudge Cake. (If not we will just have to come back later in the year!)

The Fisherman’s Rest is the only surviving remnant of the Palace Hotel; the later having been demolished in 1969. It was originally the coach house of the hotel and was later converted to serve as a non-resident's bar to preserve the bars in the main building for the use of the hotel guests. I assumed that the name referred to a traditional drinking place for local fishermen but actually it is a memorial to a tragedy. The building was used as a temporary mortuary for the bodies of 14 lifeboatmen drowned in the Southport and St Anne's lifeboats disaster on 9 December 1886, when the sailing ship Mexico was driven aground near Southport by a storm. The lifeboatmen in those days were, of course, voluntary fishermen. The brass rail surrounding the bar is adorned with 14 mermaids in their memory and the story is told in pictures and signs throughout the interior. A wide choice of food is available and the quality is good. The choice of beers/ales/lagers is a bit limited but no complaints. Very friendly staff make this place overall a very good experience.

Whilst enjoying a sunny Saturday, in Southport, we decide to have lunch at The Fishermens Rest. Upon entering the staff were very friendly and the surroundings were nice. We sat outside as it was a lovely sunny 🌞 day. I ordered fish and chips 🍟. The fish tasted fresh, and the portion size was good, and prices are very reasonable. The lasagne my dining partner had was very tasty and a good portion size served with salad 🥗 and garlic bread. Overall, the food and service were of a good standard. The toilet 🚻 was very modern and clean. If you're in Southport, Pop in you won't he disappointed 👍
