Dreadful experience. Went to Prince of Wales on Sunday 11th June in the evening. Pub was very quiet - a couple of tables with food and a few small groups of drinkers. After waiting at the door for over five minutes to be seated we eventually seated ourselves as none of the five or six staff seemed to have noticed the three of us in the doorway. Nobody came to our table so we had to get menus for ourselves as there were only drinks menus on the table. After several minutes, we went to the bar to order as nobody came to our table to take an order. We paid for the meal and drinks separately. When the drinks arrived, the diet coke was soda water so the bar staff said that they'd re-do this drink and bring it over - they didn't. We had to go to the bar to remind them. The food was placed on the pass for several minutes - the chef had dinged the bell twice but nobody took any notice and indeed one of the wait staff moved past our food waiting under the heat lamps to sort out payment on an adjacent table. It turned out that he was our server. When the food arrived it was hot (surprisingly) and tasty. Just prior to this, our server approached to ask if we were ready to order as we still had menus on our table and seemed rather surprised when we said that we'd already ordered. Three people dining - two meals came at the same time but we had to wait several minutes for the third meal (mine). A check-back was made by the server some time later but he was moving away from the table before my son had finished his reply. When we had finished our meal we again had to wait for over five minutes before another member of staff came over to ask if we wanted to see the dessert menu. It was at this point that I mentioned that we had had terrible service - not greeted and seated at the outset, no menus given to us, no order taken at the table (it being table service), having to remind the bar staff of the incorrect drink and the wait for the prepared food (which we could see from our table). All we got was a rather disingenuous "I'm sorry" - even after my comment that we probably wouldn't be coming back. The member of staff couldn't have seemed to be less interested. If the pub had have been heaving with customers, some of this could perhaps have been excused - except that the pub was virtually empty and there were at least five staff on. I am so incensed at this that I took to write this review within minutes of arriving home. I WOULD NOT recommend this pub unless you are prepared to put up with second-class service together with good food. I have given the Prince of Wales 1 star - primarily due to the food which was tasty and hot. The complete lack of service or care is reflected in the other missing four stars. At £42 for just three main meals, it isn't particularly cheap either!
ADDENDUM: Within six hours of my review on Google, the Assistant Manager had emailed me offering me his wholehearted apologies - which I have unreservedly accepted. I have also been offered a voucher to enable us to visit the restaurant again and I am meeting the Assistant Manager tomorrow to discuss the events of last Sunday night. Very impressed with...
Read moreWe wanted a special meal for a special occasion and had not eaten in the Prince if Wales, for a while. As usual, it did not dissapoint. The service this time however was 5 star. Ethan served us, answered a few questions we had about the food and wine, helped me make up my mind regarding which dessert to have (which was the excellent Sticky Toffee with Rum Pudding) and was polite, helpful, friendly and attentive, without imposing on our evening out. He could easily work front of house in a top class restaurant.
We had the mezze starter to share, which had a refreshing mixture of Mediterranean flavours and and although there was plenty to share, it was not too filling.
Gor mains, my wife had the belly pork with scallops, which had dauphinoise potatoes, caramelised carrot, tenderstem broccoli a rich gravy and a roasted apple sauce (plus some light crispy crackling). All very tasty, a good temperature and cooked perfectly. I had the lamb rump, medium rare, which was served with a harrissa crust, crushed potatoes, green beans, a smearing of pureed red pepper and a rich gravy. I really enjoyed the tenderness and flavour of the lamb with the light spiciness of the harissa, but would have preferred Brussel sprouts to the green beans and caramelised parsnip to the pureed red pepper, although I thoroughly enjoyed the meal as it was.
We shared a bottle of Malbec which was excellent value for just under £30, with blackberry, cherry and plum flavours, lightly smoky and a subtle vanilla smoothness to finish. With the wine served at the perfect temperature, the whole experience was laid back, cosy and just what we needed. We also had a bottle of water to share and after a short gap, including a chat with Ethan about the desserts on offer, we decided to go for the white chocolate creme brulee for my wife and the sticky Toffee pudding with Rum, for me. Again, both were excellent.
Thank you again Ethan and thank you to the chef for the excellent meal. We were totally satisfied and will be back a lot...
Read moreThe Prince of Wales in Sheffield is a great Premium Country Pub from Mitchells & Butlers, it really lives up to the category name!
Myself and girlfriend visited on a Sunday for a Sunday lunch having booked beforehand. We were promptly welcomed and shown to our table - all waitresses & waiters throughout our visit were great.
To start, I had the sticky miso oyster mushrooms which I see they no longer seem to offer which is a great shame as these were absolutely amazing. Never had anything like them before, the mushrooms themselves were cooked perfectly, really juicy and flavourful. The sauce on them was 10/10.
For mains we both went with a Sunday roast. I had the pork belly & the other half had the half chicken. We were both very impressed with our dishes, I liked how they brought out your greens on a separate dish too. Gargantuan Yorkshire pudding, roasties, stuffing, gravy and your chosen meat. All was fantastic and faultless! Only side note I could think of would be that it may be preferable to offer a steak knife with the pork belly Sunday roast as I did rather struggle to cut through the crackling with my table knife. I just about managed though, beautiful crackling!
We had ourselves a couple of the House Sodas too as we usually do when we go to a M&B owned restaurant that offers them and they were great as they always are.
I'd fully recommend here for a nice meal out, it's a little pricier than other places but you get what you pay for with great food and lovely service. I'd also recommend booking if visiting on a peak day/time as it was quite busy when we visited on a Sunday afternoon. There is a car park onsite, though the spaces are a bit tight! I'd...
