Decided to eat a roast here after not visiting for a few years. The place is a lovely setting and the drink selection is great. The roast dinner was average. Warmish, with very limited vegetables and an overwhelming Yorkshire pudding. Only two slices of beef and wasn’t offered a pot of horseradish or mustard to accompany the meal. Was only informed after the meal that you can have extra veg free of charge. For the price at nearly £19 it isn’t worth the money.
Update 2025: After not visiting this pub for a few years I decided to as I had heard good things. Upon arriving, they have now implemented parking restrictions which I can completely agree with as people always used to abuse the free parking. The garden looks wonderful and inviting even in the middle of winter but this is as far as the positives go. The price of their draughty beer, both ale, cider and lager is so expensive that I can buy two for the same price further down the road. Nearly £7 a pint for Cruzcampo and Asahi is nearing £7.20. This is atrocious for a place that does not offer premium settings or service. They had no ice! That’s half the drinks menu removed as how can you have a gin without ice? There were no hand towels in the bathrooms saying they have none left. The toilet roll holders are also broken. £9.20 for a double Archers! You can buy the bottle for that! For premium prices you expect a well kept pub and a service that matches. They even went from large pillar candles on the tables to tiny tea lights that last five minutes. A pot of tea is £3 and it was only half full and it is Twinings. That isn’t a premium brand for the price. It’s a shame as it’s such a nice place but these prices are unjustifiable when the rest of the town does not...
Read moreTerrible service. Slow to acknowledge us despite three people being at the bar. There were two particularly lazy girls who seemed to be permanently behind the bar gossiping and waiting for the others to do the work whilst a girl, who was clearly new and clueless but at least trying, ran around doing all the leg work. They were Extremely slow at taking our order and the food service was just as bad. Really tasty roast but it was served with a pitiful amount of cold veg - probably as it sat on the hot plate for 20 minutes whilst the staff argued over who was going to serve it. Asking for sauces is like you’ve asked them for something completely out of the ordinary and confusing. We then sat for 15 minutes with dirty plates despite staff walking past our table four times and we were very visibly finished. We’ve been coming here for 10 years, and sadly this is one of a handful of bad experiences in the last two months. Were unlikely to come again. It’s a shame as it used to be the best roast in Thame. Consider new waiting staff, as frankly it’s letting the...
Read moreHad a lovely drink with friends here and was so impressed by the friendly manager, that I decided to return for food a few days later. The staff were attentive and we were quickly served with olives and drinks. After that it went downhill. We waited 45 minutes for our mains (despite the pub being very quiet). When they arrived, one was luke warm at best, the other (lamb neck) was so badly cooked it crunched when I tried to eat it. Was like biting down on a load of tendons, seriously yuck! Spoke to a member of staff who kindly offered to replace it, saying they'd already had a complaint about it (!). Having already waited so long I just asked for a bar snack of a (ready made) scotch egg. Another 20 minutes later with no sign, we decided to give up and walked into town to get something else. Incredibly...
