Read moreDecided to go to Southampton 3 nights precruise to get over jet lag and see more of England. I wanted a more unique/authentic English hotel instead of the Holiday Inn or equivalent down the road & didn't mind paying for an upscale experience. After a lot of research, I booked the Ennios that advertised a luxury hotel experience & booked their Executive Superior Double, their most expensive. I saw the photo online & it indeed looked like a lovely room. I communicated with the hotel months ahead of arriving because since we were staying for 3 nights, I wanted to make sure that it had a comfortable seating area so that we wouldn't be just sitting on the bed. They said no problem. Imagine my surprise when we arrived to be told our room was directly above the lobby/bar and right on the road. I immediately said that wasn't gong to be a good fit as we are light sleepers & had arrived on an overnight flight. He knew immediately my concern about the noise & said if we had an issue after the first night that we could change rooms. Early the next morning, front desk said sorry, no rooms available to move to. I was really upset about paying almost $1200 USD to stay in a room that shouldn't be sold as their most expensive room or 4/5 star, not only for the finishes but mainly its awful location! Instead of changing rooms, we received a note with 2 sets of ear plugs from the management when we returned from spending the day out! Also strange was the fact that no one stays on the premises after the restaruarnt closes at night & instead you are provided a key to unlock the front door yourself if you want to go in or out at night or early morning before they open the lobby door at 8am. Didn't really give me a great sense of security that one might normally have staying in a hotel. ||Overall, the hotel has a good location for cruise passengers and is housed in a historic building across the street from the ferry & a Starbucks but due to the noise situation & value, we wouldn't recommend anyone stay at the Ennios hotel. We certainly won't when we sail from Southampton...
Read moreI visited Ennio's on a Friday evening, and now I know why this place wins so many awards. It is truly an authentic "Ristorante" in the traditional Italian style. The food choices are many, and the portion sizes are generous. The quality is exceptional. Try the Oysters (but you have to order in advance!). And even better the wine list has an vast variety of choices from Oceana to South American and all the standard wine regions you'd expect in- between. We had a blended old vines Zin from California that was outstanding (and well I'm partial to Zin anyway lol), but we began our meal with an excellent white burgundy that went well with the Oysters and half lobster in garlic butter that were our starters.
Mains were lamb shoulder in an awesome reduction sauce and Monkfish wrapped in Bacon, the "steak of the sea".
The dessert was heavenly dark chocolate- but I'll leave that for you to discover on your own.
The staff clearly enjoys their work as there's a lot of gregarious chit-chat amongst them. Our waiter was originally from Greece and, at our behest, gave us some great history lessons while also being well versed in the wine list and the menu's many delights as well.
This restaurant is set in a very boutique hotel (only ten rooms) right across from the ferry terminals so easy to get to.
Is there a big Italian community in Southampton? This writer has no idea, but if there is, Ennio's should be their go-to for a classical Italian dinner that would bring back fine memories of home!
I highly recommend Ennio's for all those Italian food lovers out...
