Downey's Fish and Chips - Barnes — Restaurant in Sunderland

I was on holiday in Sunderland from Northern Ireland this week visiting family. We decided to treat ourselves to fish and chips. Downey's was the closest so we went there. We were greeted by a woman with NO people skills whatsoever. She did not smile and she was rude, in fact the only people she smiled at and was friendly towards were the men. Her hygiene manners were disgusting - if she wiped her nose on her hand once, she did it a dozen times. Thank goodness she used utensils to pack the food. Before our order was ready, I asked if I could have a little carton of vinegar (as they did not have the sachets). She turned to the guy who was preparing the food (by the way he was very pleasant) and said "THEY want a carton of vinegar. He said we only sell bottles - I told him we were on holiday and didn't need a bottle. He took a carton and half filled it for us, put it in a bag and handed it to me. I sent an email to Downey’s fish shop at the Barnes Sunderland on Friday 15th April 2022 as yet I have not had a reply. We often get fish and chips from the above and have had no complaints. However on Good Friday one of my daughters and son in law came to visit, I was telling them what lovely fish and chips you do. My daughter & son in law went got 3 fish lots as my husband & myself share. Chips were ok but where was the fish?!!!! It was very very this just tasted all batter. We were very disappointed, as I said I’d been saying how lovely they were. I sent an email but haven’t had any reply. I don’t know what went wrong as we’ve always enjoyed them in the past and have always been decent size fish. I’m surprised you didn’t notice when you were putting them...

Just been served by an awful member of staff with zero people skills. Rude and obnoxious. Abrupt, aggressive tone. Was even worse with a previous customer who only came back to ask for batter. The usual staff (little blonde lady and young lad who frys) weren't in. Shame as they are always lovely. Girl frying was either on facetime or on a call... NOT HYGIENIC and the awful lady on the counter needs training in dealing with the public. Thankfully the food was for someone else otherwise I'd have walked out. Wiping the counter whilst I was adding salt and vinegar to a rather bland box of chips and pattie and brushed my hand with some manky cloth instead of waiting.
