The Saltgrass — Restaurant in Sunderland

Tried one of their sundau dinners today, no booking just showed up. Dinner was served within 20 minutes of being there no complaints about service!

Beef dinner and a pork one, both very tasty but small portions of meat. Had to pay extra for cauliflower cheese and only got one little dish of veg to share ( 1 piece of broccoli each) . Yorkshire was dry but the roasties were the best I have ever tasted really nice!! Lush gravy plenty of flavour in veg aswell. No complaints except portion size 7.5/10

This pub has gone from being the Sunderland equivalent of the steamboat with glorious varnished burgundy ceilings and Ancient fixtures and fittings and the best chips this side of the Rio Grande to a mediocre matte blue colour washed shadow of its former self and the only thing left that is anywhere near real is the fire. The two stars in my review are simply because they haven't ripped out the fire and put in a plastic one. When I went in and saw the disastrous decor and the Plastic fantastic multiple beer fonts I was absolutely broken hearted that an icon of the Riverside has disappeared. We went at lunchtime and when we arrived there was only two other people in. When asked what the house white wine was the waitress didn't know. We were then only given one menu between the three of us. While she was making the drinks, we got two more menus from the bar. When she returned they were snatched from us in case more people arrived even though it wasn't busy. When placing the food order, she couldn't recommend a dish as 'we all have different appetites' and also rudely corrected us on the pronunciation of a dish.
