I ordered a chicken shashlik and tandoori mixed grill. If you look at my other reviews you will see that I have eaten plenty of these in the past so consider myself capable of judging which are good and which are bad.
This place takes the prize for the worst mixed grill and shashlik I have ever eaten. The reason is CHEAP ingredients.
Let us start with the shashlik. There was about 1cm of water in the bottom of the container which you should not get with fresh chicken. Upon biting into the chicken it was apparent this was cheap chicken (probably frozen), they type with added water. It has a tell tail texture which gives it away. Apart from that, there was no flavour. Not the characteristic tandoori charring which you could never get on this type of chicken due to the water content.
The mixed grill was just as bad. The chicken tikka used the same cheap chicken and had no flavour. The prawn was watery so I expect this was frozen as well. The tandoori chicken had no flavour. The accompanying naan bread was dry leading me to think it was not freshly cooked.
Such a shame and such an insult to Nepalese food. You should be ashamed of yourselves for serving this low-quality food and charging one of the most expensive mixed grill prices in...
Read moreI really want to say that this restaurant is terrible... so that you will stay away and I can always get a table. Because it is the best Indian/Nepalese cuisine in the Newton Abbot area, I would like to keep it to myself. But I can't. the food is well cooked, and always contains the actual thing you've ordered (to qualify, I have frequently ordered food from other places that arrives as a brown or grey mush of indistinct origin and flavour). I can only comment on the vegetarian food, as I do not eat meat, but if you are into that sort of thing I am sure the high quality and attention given to the vegetable dishes carries over.
Gurkha Chef food is colourful, tasty and nicely spiced. The staff are friendly and helpful, and - although the food is cooked fresh, they are pretty darn quick (pay in mind that it is a very small place, that does get busy). They donate some of their profits to projects back in Nepal, helping villages in need, building schools etc. All in all, the only...
Read moreI have literally just called them 5 minutes ago asking about the delivery timing for the place which explains on there website that they are open until 11:00pm for deliveries. And the person I spoke to said that they do not deliver after 10:00pm and when I asked to explain why or to change that online would be a good idea. He got really aggitated and when I asked to speak to a manager, he claimed that he is the manager and hung up on me, instead of listening to me or trying to resolve the situation. Absolutely disgusting behaviour towards there customer!!! Seeing as I was one of there loyal customers and now they have lost that. Despite the amazing food they had and the only reason...
