First impressions on arrival; a quirky place with random framed art all over the walls. Plenty of seating both indoor and out on two levels. Staff greeted us almost immediately. Staff suggested us sitting up in the stage area as I'd requested a quieter part due to anxiety. They were very accommodating to my needs. We ordered at the table using the QR code which was super easy. Very soon after my order was accepted Staff had bought cutlery. We ordered: Mains: Bhudda Bowl with spiced chicken A side of halumi Parmasan and garlic fries Cowboy Smashed Burger with salad and coleslaw. A side of halumi fries Desserts: Banoffee cheesecake x 2 Drinks: 1 x berra merotti pint 1 x zero alcohol berry merotti bottle. The bill came to just over £80 including tips. I love to eat out and leave good honest reviews. The Martello Lounge is by far, THE best place I have had the pleasure of visiting. The food wins hands-down over every restaurant, bar, pub I've eaten at. You'd be crazy not to have a meal at this venue. If the chef and his team haven't won awards, I want to know why! All in all, a wonderful meal in a wonderfully quirky venue with excellent, attentive staff and the most amazing Chef and kitchen team and THe best way to celebrate out 6yrs together.

I went to the Martello lounge in clacton on Friday night with my work colleagues. There was 10 in our party so we rang up and booked a table a few weeks before Friday. When we arrived we sat downstairs for a few drinks whilst we waited for colleagues to arrive. You have to go to the bar to order food and drinks. I waited at the bar behind 4 other ladies to be served. There was only one young lady behind the bar serving for both drinks and taking food orders. I waited to be served for about 10 minutes whilst chatting with a colleague. I asked for a coconut and pineapple punch £5.95 alcohol free. The young girl was learning the ingredients for the cocktails and mock tails that was fine. I got a glass full of ice with the mix poured over it and got myself a straw. If I had not wanted ice (wasn’t asked) half the pint glass would be empty. It was a lovely mock-tail. I wouldn’t order again one because of the price - it’s a mock-tail and two for the amount of ice. The rest of our colleagues were running late so we went upstairs to find our table and another party (of 4 people) was sitting on our table laid for 10. We spoke to a staff member (young girl) and she did not want to confront the other party and said to us to move all the furniture around to make a huge enough table. We had to move lit candles and tables and chairs with no assistance from the staff. When everyone had arrived we went to the upstairs bar to order our food one at a time on the same table number. This took ages as two people behind the bar, one taking orders and one making the drinks. Everyone in the queue for the bar ordering food or drinks or both. One of my colleagues paid extra for sweet potato fries - extra £1. One of my colleagues asked for a burger with no tomato, no bacon and no burger sauce. Anyways all ordered and sat back down. Then the burgers started arriving one at a time. The staff were unsure what was in the burgers a colleague was given an avocado burger and told it was a cheeseburger. The colleague that ordered sweet potato fries didn’t get them, she had to ask for them to be changed. The colleague who ordered a burger with no bacon got a burger with bacon and then everyone at the table was questioned if they had bacon in their burger and had to show the bacon before the waitress would remove the bacon. This colleague got her burger when everyone else had pretty much finished their dinner. I went to the bar to order a dessert and they were out of 4 of the menu desserts. So i didn’t have a dessert. I won’t be in a rush to return. I won’t be recommending until maybe later in the year when the initial teething problems maybe be sorted. Ideally they need an app to order the food on or they need waitresses to take the order at the table. Or they need one person taking the drink orders and one person taking the food orders. Paying beforehand means you are paying before you know the service / food you are going to get. My advice get a receipt to prove what you paid for. Order a couple of drinks at the same time as your food to ensure you don’t spend half you night waiting to be served at the bar. The food was very nice and was delivered quickly after ordering. I had chicken and chips. I can’t comment on the toilets as I didn’t use. The music was loud and I was struggling to hear some of my quieter colleagues on the table. The decor is lovely and the decorator has done a lovely job. The management and service needs a bit of work.

UPDATE: New manager said she could not find this post & had no idea what this review was about, did ask het to read this, she said she will & get back to us, 9 weeks later still waiting, dont think they take customers views seriously, shame because as we are local, we would take visiting famkkt & friends here if it was nice, but do not see us doing that at all. Went to this restaurant (martello lounge). last week was shambles from the minute we entered, talking of entering when we did we couldn't tell who were customers & who was staff as the staff was wearing normal clothes, we saw a couple of ladies chatting near the knife & folks Bay & asked them who do we ask to get seated they both said you just find a table yourself. Which we did, we sat at our table for a little while until we stopped a man who was taking drinks to another table & asked could we order some drinks & food please, he informed us we go to the bar & ordered, after finding where the menus were from someone we assume was staff, my husband then queued up with a few others only to be told when he got to the bar, "cash only", we did not have any cash & was told the nearest cash machine was Natwest in town, so my husband & a few others went to get cash, some of these couples decided not to come back & went in the restaurant's on route to the cash machine, wish we did, my husband came back cash in hand & queued again, food & drinks ordered we sat in our seats watching as more confused couples came in. Our food arrived, not good. My husband's steak was "warmish." The frozen butter did not melt at all. My chicken looked like it had crushed cornflakes on it, it was cold & half of it was hard & burnt, the "salad" was the size of a 50p piece the chips tasted like they had a bucket of salt on them & these chips came in a tin camping cup, as to say we will NOT be going back. Photos attached.

On the whole the Martello Lounge is a great venue. The staff are efficient and helpful and the food is served quickly and is cooked beautifully. The atmosphere is second to none with bohemian and hygge vibes throughout. The art on the walls around the venue is a fantastic idea, and the cosy cafe areas are also top notch. The Martello Lounge also allows dogs, which adds to a family atmosphere. The reason I gave three stars for the food is not because it was not up to standard...on the contrary it was lovely. However, the franchise need to look at their menu again. Some dishes are pretty outlandish and it lacks choices such as fish and chips and scampi and chips, which you would think would be obvious choices in a seaside town. The breakfast menu is great, but the tapas choices do not include olives and bread with a flavoured oil dip, which you would think would be automatically included in a tapas menu. If there is anyway that they could have wifi installed in the restaurant, it would be a huge plus. I had a lovely evening with a group of friends, and we all had a fantastic time. Many thanks to the lovely staff there for going over and above. I will return.

It is a beautiful setting right on the Esplande of Clacton beachfront. Beautiful uninterrupted views from two levels balcony or ground level. Visited twice in one day, first for a lunchtime beer with friends and the second for an evening meal. First time using an app to order both times but not a great fan because it totally destroys customer service. Both times minimal staff/ customer contact. They seem happy just to bring drinks and food and vanish. For both visits, no meet and greet, which, as a previous worker and host in this trade, is as important as all other aspects. The decor is fantastic and although it was quiet both times we visited it just felt so comfortable and relaxing. The food was full of flavour and nicely presented, but I made a comment, not a complaint about the lack of actual curry I had in my meal. After a few mouthfuls, all I was left with was rice. This is just a comment, not a complaint, and I will go back again because it is a warm, welcoming establishment.
