Quality, proper food that it’s worth eating out for. Can’t wait to go to the restaurant after a great takeaway. We have tried just about every takeaway and Indian restaurant around about. Some are better than others, but all of them (other than this one) serve up fairly bland, over coloured food that bloats you out. It’s just stodge with spices thrown in. (And we’ve done many a trip to India, so we know what we are missing). This restaurant brought us a takeaway that: -Was on time despite road closures -Was delivered by a very nice polite friendly man -Tasted fantastic. Lovely balanced flavours. Evidently far more care being taken in the cooking than the usual offerings. -left me feeling great that night and next day
Don’t go expecting the usual vat of mush; this is quality over quantity. Order a bit more if in doubt. Prices seemed in line if not slightly cheaper than most but dishes are slightly smaller than the usual “quantity over quality offerings”. The only recommendations I’d make to the owners (as I want you to be successful and stay open!) , maybe more variety of chicken dishes would be good as not sure how many goat lovers there are. Also most parts of India have a poppadom equivalent... I missed them! I’d also love pakoras on the main menu. We will definitely be back...
Read moreAs part of our curry club this was our 20th different restaurant visited in Essex and probably the most difficult to score. Firstly, parking is an issue which is a shame. The service is 2nd to none, with constant chat and anecdotes with the owner, easily the most hospitable restaurant we have visited made easier by the low numbers of customers though. The food is unique and causes all kinds of quandary. The little touches such as the gin and the soup were fantastic. The pops were lovely but the more traditional accompaniments would have been appreciated. My potato cake starter was lovely but small. It would have been perfect with some traditional mint sauce. The pepper starter did not go down well. The chicken starter was good. The mains were lovely, very very nice but again a little small. We went for the signature dishes and they were cooked to our heat specification. The chick pea that came with it was amazing. The sides were good but again a little small, in fact we had to order more bhajis. Then dessert!!! Very very unusual but very nice, well worth trying. Overall it was very good but definitely unique. Bigger portions would be an idea. Some traditional accompaniments for pops as well as the ones available. The owner makes the restaurant, amazing chap. As I...
Read moreThis is not in any way a typical "Indian restaurant." Unlike the heavy generic fare served up in far too many places, this astonishing gem serves a limited menu of absolutely unexpected and delightful dishes that combine subtle flavors with a lightness of touch that is perhaps unique. I was reminded very much of the Lucas-Carton in its best days, when a similar approach was taken with French food, combining textures and flavors harmoniously with a delicacy that speaks of true mastery. If the people who run the Michelin Guide Rouge have any care for truly great cuisine, they should come here and award this seemingly humble out-of-the-way establishment a deserved rank. The attention to detail is everywhere: when you enter, gentle aromas entice you deeper. Even the bathrooms are immaculate. Yet nothing is pretentious, and value for money is outstanding. This is one of the exceedingly rare restaurants for which a detour of an hour or more is absolutely worth it. Go, and be both astonished and delighted. There is nothing else quite like...
