As I've only been for Sunday lunch, take this only as a review of Sunday lunch. Worst till last.
Service and staff where excellent.
The building fixtures and fittings good, would be excellent but they have squeezed table's together in the room where you go for the actual carvery, the only reason to do this is if you have full table's most of the time, in that room where we were seated was only ever half full the whole time we were there, it is not a nice atmosphere if you feel like a battery hen.
Drinks and complimentary table water brilliant came in a jar with sliced lemon and ice(really trying), beer was in very good condition they know how to look after it, can't say that for too many small places.
THE FOOD Three of our party ordered vegan options, when booking the Tuesday before we where told to ring back Thursday to order nut roasts, on Thursday we where told there was no nut roast option just vegan sausage but it was home made, when inquiring at the carvery on the day if the sausage contained quorn, the gentleman said he'd have to look at the packet. The gravy that was served with the vegan meals was described by 2 of our party as dishwater.
Meat was good choice of beef, ham, pork and turkey, they also chuck in some cocktail sausages as well, Yorkshire puddings were greasy and undercooked, offered roast parsnips at the carvery they were chopped small and over cooked, (pointed out to me later that they were deep fried which makes sense with what ends up on the plate) And now we come to the horror that was the roast potato's they were nuked, dark brown to black of those 4 put on my plate 2 where burnt out shell inedible. A selection of sources( probably to hide the taste of the food) gravy was dark thick and not the best, vegetables served at the table where passable but I suspect out of a tin or frozen from Iceland.
I nearly laughed when the waiter came round with the desert menu, informing us that the desert was included with the meal, i suppose they must have to do it that way, otherwise no one would order desert, wanting to get the hell out of there.
Sad thing is the staff was lovely and helpful.
The Bear was recommended to one of our party, maybe it was a good place to go eat at one time ( would explain the 4.5 stars on Google maps) unfortunately it no longer is, avoid unless you want a pint.
The bill worked out at £14 a head ok for a good meal, but not this. I've paid a little less and got far nicer Sunday lunches in other establishments in a 10...
Read moreRude and aggressive owner Colin towards me in front of my 14 year old daughter, my partner and a bar full of customers. I popped in to speak to him to arrange a cancer charity night after it had been previously arranged by my brother with Colin the owner. I also had messaged the pubs Facebook page thinking I was talking with the owners a few days previously and was given the times they were open on the Saturday and Sunday to pop in to speak to them. Ordered drinks and asked to speak to Colin as had been arranged. Bar staff said he was in the kitchen and they would get him. When he came out he treated me unbelievably rudely and disrespectfully. He told me we were in the wrong pub, that it was another local pub we had arranged it with. He was looking at his bar staff for answers as I told him I'd been messaging someone from there yesterday. He insinuated I am a liar telling me they know nothing about it, someone's on a windup and the pub isn't even on Facebook. Then proceeded to aggressively say to me "What's my name then? What's my name?!" Then he walked away back the way he came. Disgusting unprofessional attitude from this business on 18th November 2017. Beware if you go to this pub politely asking if it's ok to speak to them about a charity night or if they are too busy. The response I got was disgusting.
After messaging the pubs facebook page complaining I received no response whatsoever, so I left a 1* review. 2days later on 20th received comments from a staff member who was not there on the Sat night, but runs the business Facebook page, calling me a liar, childish, commenting common sense.Facebook removed review 8th January.I gave 1* stating "my review has been removed, what's the point of a review page when the bad reviews get removed? It's not a real representation." Received more comments 20th January from same staff member including saying I have a personal vendetta against the pub. This is undeniably unprofessional. Now there are 2 complaints about disgraceful customer service not just the...
Read moreI was here a few nights days ago for a family meal and had a great time. Very good!
To be entirely honest, when I first saw the menu, I was a little uninspired because it just looks like fairly standard pub grub on the surface; gammon and chips, curry, pie, scampi, etc. and while there's nothing wrong with any of it, it can seem a little boring at first glance.
However, having very much enjoyed my meal, I can now say in retrospect that the quality and standard of the food was excellent. Many of the dishes are described as homemade, but it doesn't really do the menu justice when compared with many similar venues, that often favour ordered in, precooked or heavily processed meals these days. Also worth a mention would be the portions, with everyone around the table commenting on how they were all stuffed to bursting!
I also felt the service was very good because ultimately, we were a fairly big group in a relatively small venue and they did a great job in getting all the meals out together, regularly checking in on us and were prompt and efficient in bringing and clearing dishes.
In summary, an excellent little pub for great pub grub and drinks at...
