Went on a weekday for their fixed price lunch menu which is excellent value for three courses.
Firstly, I'd say that their carpark system is very complicated and yes, I'm of the smartphone generation. The instructions are just not clear at all. In the end we managed it and you get the £5 back if you eat there. We saw another customer struggling for some time. I think they need to think of those customers who might struggle with the tiny and convoluted instructions. Confusingly there's also a registration notice at the entrance to the bar (which is a separate entrance from the hotel) but that's only for overnight guests.
The place was exceptionally busy and I think the serving staff coped well. The menu advertised a starter with a soft poached egg, it is not and I saw other people with it the same, one customer sent hers back. It was well-cooked and I think it must be those pre-prepared poached eggs. That's down to JW Lees who run these places. Personally, I wouldn't offer a dish with a soft poached egg if it can't be delivered. The prawn & avocado starter was good. Main course was good but my steak was a little bloody but I didn't send it back as it was so busy. Always hard to get steaks spot on. It tasted good though and was tender. Dessert was the star for both of us. The crumble came with custard and ice-cream and the pineapple fritters were generous.
I thought drinks were reasonable value given that drinks in the UK are terribly expensive.
Service was efficient and well organised but they were very busy, so I don't think they had time for anything apart from the job. I would say they could have done with an extra staff member front of house.
Yes, I would go back but I would perhaps choose different dishes. The fixed menu is a...
Read moreFirstly I need qualify this review with some positive points. We have been to the Inn at the Bay on numerous occasions, and yes, perhaps I should have left more positive feedback in the past... so, 5 stars for all those other times. The food on those occasions has been consistently good... or better. The staff are attentive and hard working and they are quick to clear and clean empty tables. So, as you can tell... usually no complaints. Today, however, was shockingly poor. We decided, as it's Sunday, to have their sharing roast dinner platter. The platter came out without plates and sat in front of us for a few minutes while plates and vegetables arrived and we dug in. It didn't take us long to realise that the platter and vegetables were cold. Not only that, but the roast potatoes were anemic and the beef was like leather. I sent my beef back and was presented with what looked like a a fatty steak, rather than thin sliced beef. At which point we asked for the manager who kindly took it all away and gave us menus once again. We quickly ordered fish and chips, which, looked great... but! The fish had been fried in an oil that left an after taste. I can only assume that it was olive oil or rapeseed oil. Not wanting to complain again, we ate what we could and left. It won't, necessarily stop us from returning, but I do feel that something was missing today and it...
Read moreAfter holidaying in the local area for a week, on our last evening we were on the hunt for a place to eat, after searching online we came across The Inn At The Bay and decided to book a table. On arrival we were stood in a tight corridor which was sign posted one way due to social distancing so respectfully we followed the guidance, however a member of staff then stood in the door way wanting to exit which he was not supposed to do. No excuse me or thank you and the atmosphere towards us felt cold. If you are expecting customers to follow a one way system then please follow it yourselves. Drinks and starters were ordered within 20 minutes, then when our mains arrived I ordered a drink which took another 25 minutes to arrive, after asking two members of staff where my drink was I was given one but not what I had ordered, with no apology. During our visit we got a feel for the place and could see that members of staff treated locals differently, they were very attentive and friendly to them, asking how the food and drinks were and most of their attention was on the other side of the restaurant ( The Bay ). Our service felt very much like we were an inconvenience to them, with that being said the food was lovely and if the service was improved we...
